Was in my local Amex Forex place today, and noticed signs up which basically say:

From 1 July 2009, Cashing Travellers Cheques will have a fee of $8.

This is interesting because Amex traditionally have cashed their own cheques for free worldwide - and is a selling point for the cheques vs other payment methods.

Not sure whether Amex cardholders will continue to have the fees waived or not.

Their website has no further details that I can see, except to say:

Will I have to pay commission to encash Travellers Cheques overseas?

All American Express & Representative offices encash American Express Travellers Cheques commission-free. You can also click here for our Fee-Free Exchange Partner listing.

How rude! Maybe they want to get out of the TC business....
