Hey guys,

Heading interstate (Vic - NSW) and need to hire a car. I have an Amex Platinum Charge card and wish to reduce my excess to $0 (in case I have an accident). After reading the Amex Platinum Charge Card insurance T&C's, I get the impression my card will cover this (should this occur), hence I do not need to pay the extra $X a day to resuce the excess to $0. Am I correct in this assumption? Below is the extract of the relevant T&Cs....

Cover
Cover is provided under this part for the following benefits below, subject to the
other terms, conditions and limitations set out in this document.

1. We will pay any amounts You are responsible for under the Rental Agreement,
including the Deductible if loss is incurred during a Covered Rental Trip, as a
result of accidental damage, fire, vandalism, theft or loss of use of the Rental
Vehicle. This will apply whether You are responsible or not for the accident.
We will pay You up to:
• AUD70,000; or
• the value of the Rental Vehicle; or
• the value of the claim;
Whichever is the lesser.
We will pay the above in respect of any one (1) accident or occurrence and
a maximum two (2) claims per three hundred and sixty-five (365) days.

So as long as the damage is under $70,000 (the car I will hire will be well under $70,000 in value!), am I correct in assuming I am ok? (of course I will be not be drinking under the influence of alcohol, etc)

Make sure you are 250 km iirc (Please check the T&C for the correct distance) away from your home address too.

Thanks for that Diesellife - I am interstate and have calculated I am at least 800km from my home :) (I checked that clause also and it was 250km from the permanent or te mporary place of residence I am currently residing in)

Note that you have to make sure the value is under $70,000, not so much for the possible damage, but the provisions of coverage which require that. If the retail cost of the car new is over $70,000, my interpretation of the wording is that you are not covered at all - not just only covered up to $70,000, so be careful what you hire.

Also beware that unlike the Travel Insurance, which lets you pay anyway you like, to be covered for the hire car loss/damage you must pay all the rental charges on the Amex Platinum Charge card.

Is the other car covered by the Amex insurance if you are responsible for an accident involving two vehicles?

I have searched the T&C and cannot find any reference to this.

very good point Fifa - I checked the T&Cs with the car hire company and this is covered in the LDW (Loss Damage Waiver) which was automatically added to the cost when I booked the car. I will get clarification when I go to pick up the car though - I obviously want to make sure I am covered for 3rd party property damage.
