Ambiguous website booking system for international upgrades

So I've just booked a return trip the states in February with the idea of registering for an upgrade (from economy).

Whilst booking I deliberately choose the "saver" fare class (which added an extra $600), as the website saver fare conditions explain "Flight Upgrade Awards are not eligible on all Red e-Deal fares.Flight Upgrades can only be redeemed on Qantas operated flights."

To me that implies that upgrades will be eligible so long as the flight is operated by Qantas, which it is (QF107/QF12). However after booking I noted that the trip has booked into N class on both legs, which are ineligible for upgrade.

Has anyone had a similar experience? It's pretty frustrating that I forked out an extra $600 for the chance of an upgrade only to have it book into an unexpected class. Next fare class up is semi-flex, which would add an extra $850 onto the booking. I'm tired of qantas taking all my money, so no chance I'll be paying that.

Does anyone think I'd be able to call up and get a refund to drop to a lower fare class and save the money?

There is a bug at present, ring the service centre who can do it for you if in fact the fares are eligible.

Hi Wheatbix, I just went through very similar. By abiding by the lowest fare on the day police I did end up with a Sal fare to LA and a Saver return. I assumed I had no ability to upgrade but I checked and was able to request an upgrade on the return leg (So of course I applied!). I then noticed that I wasn't able to select the seats I wanted so I called the FF line and got some great advice.

As I had called within 24 hours of booking I was able to change my tickets at no additional expense. I paid ~$370 to change the fare class on the trip to the US and this was eligible for an upgrade. Prior to doing this the lovely lady on the phone was able to check and confirm the chances of an upgrade were quite good. In essence I had to pay $375 and potentially my points for an upgrade, something I was happy to do.

If anyone else is in a similar boat to me I think it's a great way to get an upgradeable class at the lowest possible price.

To note, the operator agreed the fare classes were quite confusing, so if they confuse staff, how will we know!

So if it is within the first 24 hours you may be able to change your tickets for no fee (I am not 100% on the rules for this).

Good luck!!

Yes, a member of my family made a mistake on dates a couple of weeks ago, and rang about making a change. QF said because it was in the first 24hrs, no problem.
