The normally tolerant Flying Mermaid is starting to turn into a bit of a fury and also to wonder if I am jinxed? Had to swap to QF8 instead of QF12 in order to avoid being downgraded to business. QF 8 was due in a bit later than Qf 12, but still fine to make an 8:15 flight. However we didn't disembark until well after 7. Still thought it was doable as travelling First our luggage should come off quickly. Smart gate rejected me and I joined the queue feeling a bit anxious. However that delay wasn't a problem as no luggage in sight. Another F passenger came over to chat - no sign of her luggage either. I think there were 9 passengers in F and so at least 30% had their luggage not come out. I think we finally got our bags after about 1/2 hour - long after economy passengers had strolled off (I know this for a fact as we had quite coincidentally had some people we knew on the flight who were in economy).

No chance of making our business class flight and had to settle for the back of a dash-8. Did still get our chauffeur drive, as a lovely young man in the J lounge phoned and made sure the car hire people in Canberra knew what was going on.

Finally got got to Canberra just desperate to get home, open up the cases, get our contact lens stuff and have a shower. Oh guess what - our cases were off loaded in Sydney due to a weigh problem. I blame Mr FM (and Qantas). He insisted on getting black cases with bright orange bands to make it easy to identify them - I am sure they attracted the baggage handlers attention when choosing cases to offload. :)

Yes that's them - how could a baggage handler resist them when choosing luggage to offload!

Learning experience I say.
While QF does not like us doing it on the same PNR, I sometimes after my trip to NZ have a wider time between SYDi arrival and SYDd departure to ADL, leaving more time to do the int to dom transfer. By buying separate dom QF tickets.
J class from ADL to connect in SYD to anywhere overseas, (seeing ADL does not have any QF int flights anymore), sometimes very short transfer/transit time, leaving little time to use any lounges.
In your case FM, it might have not been cheaper to get an F class from the US to SYD on the same PNR in J class to CBR, than to have it separate, but next time, if you can afford it, do the booking separately, $$$$$ I know.
1hr25mins (int to dom) means not a lot of time to stay in the SYDd QP/J lounge.
A lot of J class flights AKL/WLG/CHC to SYD/MEL to ADL on the same PNR in my case, gives me 1hr30mins coming back.
One time coming back from WLG, I had to practically run from MEL T2 to MELT1, because of storms the JC flight into MEL was very late. Same PNR. Didnt get the chance to use the MELd QP. Grrrrrrrrrrrr...
Jinxed, maybe not, bad luck, aye to that one.

TSA or who ever does US incoming passenger baggage checks these days would have had a field day with them on their way into the US eh?
Stands out like a sore thumb, those baggage in the pix.

How did you find them travel wise ?
Good actually - the black does show a few marks, but then all luggage does. They were very easy to wheel (and we took them over some rough ground). They still are in good condition. The orange straps are great for adding a bit of security to everything and give nice handles for lifting. It was quite easy to manage clothes with the two sides - we could organise clean on one side and dirty on the other etc. The only issue (and this applies to all these sorts of cases), is that you need more space to open them out.

Interestingly enough weren't checked by TSA at all....

Thanks for the advice, Poochie. :)

Bad luck there. I will suggest never leaving important things like contact lens stuff in checked bags.

Bottles are more than 100ml ..... I generally have spare bottles at home, but we are out. I have sent Mr FM out to buy some more.

Spare bottle at home. Always travel with a 90ml bottle and as a suggestion for next time, take the bottle out before the flight to CBR as there are no LAGS restrictions.

I will have to see if I can find a smaller bottle - never seen one (I wear gas permeable not soft). Good idea about taking out of luggage, although I have to say it didn't even occur to me that my luggage wouldn't make it from Sydney to Canberra!

Also, according to this, contact lens solution can be exempt from the liquids rules

Liquid, aerosol and gel exemptions
interesting - can't see anything like that on BAs site and terminal 5 is quite strict. E.g. Every time we went through on this trip every item of photographic equipment that Mr FM had (and he has a lot ), had to be unpacked and hand checked as well as having one of those wands passed over it. Wouldn't want to get into an argument or have it confiscated!

No, confiscation would be less than ideal. The TSA website says that you must declare any medically necessary liquids before commencing the screening process as well.

I might look on the web to see if I can get smaller bottles, as that is the safest solution. I am feeling like I am having a bad run though. 4 flights with QFi in 3 months and all have had issues - lengthy delays, missed connections, wet luggage - I had almost forgotten - when I got on the flight in DFW, I opened one of the swinging drawers to store my inflight toiletries and it totally jammed and two "engineer" couldn't fix it and it had to be taped to keep it secure!

Yay - luggage has arrived in Canberra and we will have it by 6 pm - if Mr FM wasn't so tired I would send him to get it (we live a whole 15-20 min from the airport). I can remember the days when if Qantas lost your luggage then they would immediately deliver it when it arrived.....

Qantas Link regularly misplace my luggage flying into DPO and always deliver it to my door - about 60km from the airport
