Hello everyone,

We are arriving 5:10 from SFO on Fiji Airways and leaving for BNE at 22:55 on Qantas. This will be in early October so I imagine it will be nice and warm. Please let me have your suggestions for a good relaxing place to spend the day outside the airport. In my fantasy I am napping near the beach after a nice lunch, and I am not being hassled to death by purveyors of goods and services.

I
s something approximating this achievable without booking overnight into a resort?

All suggestions gratefully received.

I think you should book a day room with nice pool. From our visit years ago the beaches have been privately developed. Fiji doesn’t have the Bali hawker issue.

Thank you Pushka, a "day room" is taking a room for the day rather than overnight? I've not known about that possibility. It sounds like it might be a fantastic solution. Any recommendations re venues where this might be offered? I have edited my original post for clarity.

I’m quite out of date with Fiji Hotels but if you can pick up anything around Denarau Island you will get your beach. Many places offer the use of the resort facilities for the day for a cash price which sometimes includes a meal etc.

Here’s an example on Trip Advisor. It’s a bit far away from Nadi for you though but they are out there

There's cheap lunches to be had down towards Wailoaloa Beach, and a guy who sells fresh coconuts in the morning after 9am – not a pushy fella, take it or leave it as a nice drink for whatever you think is worth a fair price. Although frankly the beach isn't all that fantastic and there's mostly backpackers around there. That said, it's a nice place to relax and only metres from the airport (FJD$13 for a taxi). Some of the hotels down there have a pool with complimentary canoes to paddle about in. The Aquarius has a shower room specially equipped for guests departing later in the evening.

Thanks Catweazle for your suggestion. Especially for your careful portrayal of the dynamics around the guy who sells fresh coconuts on the beach. I hope I didn't come across as real intolerant in my OP - I went shopping once in Suva many many years ago and it was not a very relaxing experience.

Oh not at all! I've had much the same experience in Nandi, complete with the whole cultural Kava extravaganza. Which is only why I mentioned this chap, because either he's nice and doesn't come across as wooing one for the sake of the contents of one's wallet or else he's just so good at marketing and customer service that he doesn't come across as so. He had me every morning :D
