I'm headed to Alaska in November and wondering what your thoughts are in terms of the itinerary and if you folks have any suggestions for an AK-first-timer.
Initially I'll fly into ANC late in the evening on a Wednesday, probably pretty jetlagged after stopovers in HNL and SEA (that's QFF reward availability for you).
I'll then fly down to SFO the following Tuesday, before hopping north again to YEG, so that's barely 6 days in total. I know that 6 days is not long enough, but it will suffice for now to get a brief taste of AK with the hope to return in the future!
I had intended to hop the Aurora Winter train to Fairbanks on the Saturday. But now I'm thinking of flying direct to the northern most tip in Barrow for an overnighter on the Saturday, before heading to FAI.
Yes, I know it'll be cold and dark. It'll be a shock to the system, having now become acclimatized to the QLD climate these past four years! The question is, have you alternative suggestions or would you recommend the train over BRW or even FYU? I love the outdoors, the wilderness and mountains although the Fairbanks region is somewhat flatter, no? Would it be better to pop south to Seward or Homer for two or three days instead? Probably biting at more than I can chew... What would you do in my shoes?
