Dropped Scooby off at the airport today and the airline signs on the right hand side of the road (indicating check in positions) have been replaced with generic "Sydney Airport" signs.

I guess I knew I was at Sydney airport, but didn't know where Virgin was......

That's annoying for newcomers. Was it the domestic or international terminal?

I think it's easier to for pax to know if they are going to T1, T2 or T3. Then if you see an empty space & you're at the right terminal, take it!

When at a long concourse, I would rather park near the appropriate airline sign, so I don't have too far to walk.

I saw this this morning. The last thing Sydney airport needs a the moment is more confused cars in the departures area. I presume it has to be the pre-cursor to a movement of the check-in desks. Either that or SYD is upgrading from taking our money to messing with our minds

Little problem is that with the exception of Qantas, the airlines rarely have regular desk banks.

Until they can pin this down (can they?), there's almost little point of the signs anyway. As far as I can remember, most of them were in the wrong place anyway.

VA at SYD haven't moved for years. Indeed I don't think they've moved since moving into T2. I remember the long walk to their original terminal & was so happy when they moved to T2.

At SYD at least, given a choice between finding a spot near the relevant terminal compared to doing laps & finding a spot near the relevant door eventually, I'll take the walk.

I was referring to T1 for all airlines. (Well aware that QF have T3 and VA have T2).

I don't know if VA have moved desks at T1 at all. Last I remember I thought they took row H.

I know Qantas always have row C (and one other - can't remember, might be D).

That is annoying. As a Sydneysider, I know most airline checkin counter positions so know where best to alight (but usually this is determined where there is a space for the car to pull in!) but I often check this link to make sure the memory hasn't failed me (again)!

Not so good for the aged, infirm, disabled, but when did Sydney Airport have any empathy for anyone.

Roll on a second airport (yeah I know, pie in the sky) if not to just pull these company into line.

BAM1748, Sydney Airport has first right of refusal on (owning and operating?) any 'second (new) airport' in the Sydney basin.

Thst's not to say it might decline to do this.

If governments would build high speed rail links to MEL and BNE, this would take a lot of the pressure off aviation in the SYD area and despite a report claiming to the contrary might also delay the "need" for a second airport.

High speed trains steal lots of passengers from airlines. A certain Mr Maxwell would be hugely opposed to true high speed trains in Oz.

I agree with you. If you are travelling with a large family or infirm person Andy get off at the front for a flight on say SQ, you have a very very long and painful walk to get to the right desk. On a busy SYD morning (ie every morning) the removal is signs will add to travel confusion, walk times and therefore general airport pandemonium.

Not much more than before when airlines would shift desks and/or the signs were in the wrong place anyway.

You would be better off checking the row online on the Sydney Airport website in advance, then driving up to the according entry.

But generally I agree with you that I would not rate Sydney high on the list of being accessible friendly. Thankfully it's only  Sydney Airport, not Hong Kong or Bangkok or Dallas Fort Worth. If they removed the airline signs there, that would be a riot (but thankfully almost all the time, the airlines retain the same desk rows at those airports).

To me, it wasn't clear that the OP was talking about T1. VA run how many services a day from T2 compared to T1?

Ah well my mistake. I only guessed the OP was referring to T1 (international terminal) as that's what makes the most sense to have the airline signs.

T2 is hardly worth having the signs (two airlines) and T3...well, do you really need signs there?

You may well be still correct. The OP mentioned a VA flight & as we both know, there's a handful of VAi flights compared to VAd.
