Hi All,

QF has decided to change aircraft types on my booking QF128 on 6 Jan 2018 from an A380 to an A330, and then have changed the later QF118 to the A380. I chose QF128 to maximise my chances of a points upgrade, and now it seems that the aircraft change has reduced those chances (fewer J seats). Am wondering if anyone has had QF change flights due to the reason and no charge? Will call the Platinum line later today, but am looking for precedent.

Thanks!

Good luck. QF would purely see this as a voluntary change request and thus (likely) demand the change fee as required by the fare conditions of your ticket. You may find an understanding agent who would do it and waive any fees, but I would suspect that to be rare. It's not like the timing of the flight has been changed or anything like that so it's a bit hard to argue that you're not getting the service that you booked originally (since upgrade requests are rather more intangible)

Anyway good luck!

I'd be approaching it on the basis of "really wanting to fly the A380" and not on the upgrade options!

Having said that, it only costs really your time to call and ask, worth a shot.

I have rang and asked to change flight on the basis of aircraft change and have been successful in the past so yes give it a go it costs only a phone call and time as others have said. :) :)

You wanted to change back to an 3 crew coughpit 762 right? :D

I wouldn't mention the upgrade but say the A380 is a better aircraft and that is why I chose that flight.

Qantas will tell you plane type can change, blah, blah, blah.

I would think your chances are good.

My experience is also that if you chose the flight due to the aircraft, they are normally ok about moving you to another flight operated by that aircraft.

QF128 not just changed aircraft, they also changed departure time from 19:50 to 17:50. So you might say new departure time is not suitable.

I lost my 3A (J class in F seat) on QF128 due to change of aircraft. I called Qantas and asked them to put me on QF118 and same seat. All done in 10 minutes.

I've got the same issue, but swapped from an A380 to a 747. There are a few less J and PE seats on the 747 but many fewer Y seats compared to the A380. I am not sure if I am better sticking to the 747 or trying to switch back to the A380 to maximise chances of an upgrade. Any thoughts?

Called up and all good... moved to QF118 and they moved the upgrade requests as well.... Great work from Scott @ QF Premium line...

Further to what others have said, QF actually markets their A380 as a special experience, and lists the routes and flights so that you can specifically book the A380: https://www.qantas.com/travel/airlines/a380/global/en

On this basis, asking to be moved in the event of an aircraft change is not necessarily a 'voluntary' request if you booked it at the time (which of course you did!). The only caveat QF says on the page above is that aircraft can be subject to last minute changes. In the OP's case this is not a last minute change.

I'm glad I was wrong and it worked out :)

on reflection given this change has just ripped through the system many people are probably calling with change requests and they may be more or less flexible on such things given the relatively short notice of the changes

I wonder how long till they remove the page! :p

Thanks - why do you say that?
For me the A330 is inferior. Actually hate it with a passion and everytime I think of booking SYD-BKK return I start to think of ways to avoid it such as going via HKG. Now with wife and daughter is a different story.

In economy I'd rate 747 -> A380 -> 787 -> 777 -> A350 -> A330. I'm seriously thinking about taking a break from Qantas and booking TG 747s in economy next year using MileagePlus miles earned and about to be devalued.

I am the same although I have had no experience with the A350. Or the 787 at all the moment

I did the A350 with SQ and it's ok. Would love to try with TG and CX at some point.

I think that's one award where ~AUD200 to fly business class is a steal.

3x3x3 in a 787 is >> 2x4x2 in 330??
Give me the 330 (even EBG/EBL with the coughpy IFE any day) in Y

JohnK I actually think you need to experience Air AsiaX (D7) - 3x3x3 on a 330 and a tight pitch.
