re: Air New Zealand 744 ["Near"] hit by lightning in BNE

It looks like a rather intense storm and hit.

Unusual for a Air NZ 747 to be in Brisbane. Looks like it was a stand in for the usual 777. Did it actually hit the plane? Looks like it might have hit behind it.

Very lucky capture! With what appears to be a mobile phone too?

I don't know I re-posted from reddit.

at the millions of volts lightening is, a hit would create separate flares to earth from many parts of the plane, the tyres would likely be smoking as well... It would have made the news, however, considering the earthed light towers and buildings are higher than the tail on the 744, it is very likely that if the lightening did come close enough to the terminal it would hit an earthed item rather than an unearthed item (i.e. plane sitting on rubber tires) - the path of least resistance.

I doubt that that lightening is closer than 3-4 km away, just a really cool pic :)

It was a pretty vicious storm. I'm fairly certain an ANZ 744 took off about an hour (or 2?) after the storm had passed. Might not have been that particular aircraft but as richie9x said it is rare for the ANZ 747 to visit.

I have taken photo's of near miss lightning strikes and where they hit there is huge plasma bursts that travel along the ground, while that photo looks like a hit, I would say it was some distance behind as there is no sign of this effect.

Actually, it is not that rare.

NZ135 and NZ136 are always operated by widebodies which for NZ can be 744, 777 & 763.

A plane is normally earthed when parked, it's a requirement for refuelling.

Revenge for Ansett

Does it have one of those strips I see hanging off the back of cars? ;) :p

Actually it does, or at least it used to. I remember when I worked for Team Aer Lingus & then FLS Aerospace they had little plastic looking lightening rods that were attached to the trailing ends of the wings or flaps to disperse lightning! Presumably they are only of value in the sky though, might need to direct jb747 here to answer that.

The discharge straps are used in flight, on the ground it's an earth at the nose:

Would need a long strap to reach the ground.

Cheaper to drink wine than water while in Adelaide?

Who would drink toilet water anyway? Or is that an Adelaide thing? :)

And people wonder why aprons shut down when there is a storm around:

I suspect a wheel change as well as a few underpants needed to be changed!

Thanks to the poster who linked the video on Pprune (http://www.pprune.org/7527629-post21.html), the same thread mentions the original strike was well behind the 744 in post 1.
