Air India, meanwhile, seems to have jumped the gun and sent its team to Charleston to pick up the aircraft.
“While the cabinet has approved it (the contract) and there should be no objections, the law ministry has to still clear the wording and the final contract. It is still not very clear when this will happen,” the official added. “What do we pay Boeing without this contract?”
Air India cannot release any payments to Boeing till the contract is approved by the law ministry.
The three Dreamliners meant for Air India are ready and parked at Boeing’s South Carolina factory. A fourth was preparing for its maiden flight when its General Electric Co. engine blew up during a 28 July taxi test. Each plane has a list price of just over $200 million (around Rs.1,100 crore).

Not sure how the failings of government bureaucracy can lead to such conclusions about the airline.

in Air India's case, it is entwined with the government, so its valid IMO.

I don't care who is to blame, but Air India doesn't have a good name it seems!

777s - Quite a few "training" incidents
787's - Sitting around not being flown

Quite a few other things as well from memory

I bet if this was Australia you'd all be blaming the government and not the airline. Why any different for India. [/rhetorical question]

Valid or otherwise, your reply doesn't address the question I asked.

They have been announcing flights to Australia for the past three years and nothing ever comes of it. This is another set back, not that I would be flying them anyway. They are mess I work with loads of Indians who try to avoid flying them. The only good airline in India is Jet.

Basically because Air india is Government owned and India is the land of red tape.Has been discussed on here a few times.Gets a Government bail out virtually every year.

Which just proves my point. The attorney-generals' department failure to vet a contract in a timely manner tells us nothing about the operations of the airline contrary to the assumptions of some posts here.

Air India and Indian Governmental bureaucracy go hand-in-hand. I don't think you can actually distinguish between the two. I wouldn't be surprised if this whole matter is simply because some big-wig in the AG dept's 19yr old neice wasn't employed as senior flight attendant on the fashionable Delhi to New York sector..

It tells us everything we need to know. Nothing can be done in India without masses of paperwork/red tape which is entrenched throughout the society. The conclusion is the same whether it is a government department or a government run entity such as Air India.

I can understand why you might think this, but if you look deeper, you might see things differently.

I think your missing the point, there are plenty of good enterprises on the sub continent, it's just when they mix with government it goes pear shaped, in this case Air India is effectively a government department.

Well they sorted the paperwork on one with delivery overnight, now the race is on to 787 start services to Australia, who will be first, Air India or China Southern?
