The French Economy Minister said Air France’s future is at risk and it could “disappear” with the French Government ( which owns 14.3%) ruling out any bail out for the loss making airline.
His remarks come as the airline is in the midst of a series of strikes.

Air France survival in doubt, says minister

We rebooked Air France flights last week for June as you just never now. We got totally caught out with Ansett.

I don’t think their demise is that imminent, and the ministers statement should be taken in the context of an ongoing industrial dispute. However all is not well at Air France.

Demise sure, strikes - yes. Am already impacted by the rail strike so taking pre emptive action.

It seems President Emmanuel Macron is not as popular at home as he is internationally. His attempts at labour reforms, like others before him, are causing significant industrial unrest.

I remember another airline whose financial situation was apparently quite poor, and some even suggested their demise was imminent, they took drastic industrial measures and were appealing to government for help (legislative change). They managed their way out.

Yes indeed, a sense of deja vu, but I think after years of Socialist leaning French Governments, Macron has an even tougher job.

Emmanuel Macron kicks off controversial attempt to reform France's labour laws

The socialism ingrained in French culture is even worse than Australia.

If AF goes bust, what happens to KLM - aren't they the same company now? Or have they been kept as two separate corporate structures so KLM could continue operating regardless?

Air France may well be regretting their dirt cheap F fares ex-IST yesterday:
So how many of these bargain fares did you manage to book before they realised they had made a mistake with the booking classes? ;)

Hopefully none - they all got downgraded back to Y :)

I don't know if the French government will "really" let them go bankrupt - but they should. We have had several bad experiences with Air France going back several years and always - always - staff related. Strikes, walkouts, "oops, it is snowing, we're off, good luck". Qantas had it easier because we already had made some labour reform which France desperately needs. And Macron might make that happen. He is actually very popular - as long as he touches someone else's pile, not mine! But eventually France has to look at Germany and get it - some things have to change. One reason the unions are fighting SO hard is that they see this as their Waterloo. If Macron stays the course and the overall public sticks with Macron their political influence is dashed forever. Macron doesn't want to be another Sarkozy who wilted when trying reforms, he would be useless for the rest of this term. So I think he will stick with it and the French will eventually wake up - these reforms don't kill the labour market, they bring in sensible and overdue reforms and still don't match Germany, their clearly more successful neighbour.

The French and labour reforms go together like oil and water.

I still remember the first time I arrived in Paris as snotty nosed 20 year old. Dreaming of the Eiffel, Louvre, Arc de Triomphe .
What I got was 100+ policeman with machine guns coming out of CDG and farmers in tractors blocking the highway. And it was all to do with cheese!

Never dreamed I'd be potentially shot at for some brie....

Well, more complicated than that, but you get the idea.

You have to love the French :)

No, I don't like their labour style, but it is only because of pig-headedness and fierce national pride that they are able to maintain some flavour in a world that gets more and more the same.....

I’m not a fussy flier and certainly not as much as some of our friends on AFF but I can say hand on heart Air Chance is a horrid airline, I’ve had such at very best - average experiences, I honestly wouldn’t mind if they disappeared or had a major reform.

Will echo those sentiments.
Hopefully this is the kick up the backside they need
