    Hey Guys,

I'm just wondering if the normal version of Tapatalk still works with AFF? By the amount of trouble I'm having finding it I'm guessing not but I'm looking for a second opinion as to wether its a yes or a no. :-|

I'm not generally interested in getting an iPhone or iPod touch just to look at AFF and am wondering if there are any plans for a symbian based AFF app like the iPhone one? I like my Nokia (At times) and I don't really want to get rid of it.

Feel free to weigh in or shoot me down for being a Nokia user

    Josh :p

    Bang,bang bang!Josh I am not a good shot.
Even I have mostly mastered my Iphone and IPAD and their genius bar can really help you change over at the Apple store.
I used to think nothing could beat my old Nokia but I was wrong.

I think we might be getting off topic before we begin.

Even if a Symbian-based app or Android or anything else appeared, you’d still need to be a Silver or Gold member to use it, as when the content is displayed on such a device, the ads don’t display, and the site is ad-supported unless you’ve got a subscription.

That being said, I could understand why you wouldn’t want to subscribe, if the only truly mobile version of the site (other than mobile mode), didn’t support your device of choice.

So I think you might be out of luck with getting an app on any other device.

I believe the correct answer is 'no'. Mostly because access to post from the mobile app is a paid benefit, and Tapatalk couldn't be appropriately configured without customisation (hence the custom app for AFF).

More generally, Nokia handsets are rubbish :p get an Android or an iPhone ;)

Not completely true, I used Tapatalk before the AFF Mobile app and as I haven’t deleted it from my iPhone I can still use it to browse and post to the site, though with the domain name change, that might not last too much longer. It’s only possible because it’s saved in the app, searching for it yields no results though.

But I can’t see admin re-enabling it as it’s a paid benefit of the site, not of the app.

Those folks indulging in their love affair with Apple products might like to consider what niceties Apple may have planned for future software updates. This report is a little scary .

Member munitalP also posted that article on Facebook, and essentially it’s a patent application describing methods that Apple could secure data if an iPhone was used unauthorised. While it does state unauthorised uses as "jailbreaking", it’s not the sole idea behind the patent, and it was filed last year, before the latest ruling by the courts saying you could jailbreak.

Anyone that finds the patent alarming at face value I don’t think understands what the sole purpose is, which is to disable your phone should it be stolen, and perhaps take a photo of who’s using it.

The last version of the article I read said that Apple’s MobileMe already had a more than capable feature that allowed the device to be tracked if lost/stolen and disabled, but I can tell you it doesn’t allow me to take photos… so I just see this as refinements on that, but maybe more so.

There’s loads of ridiculous patent applications out there that overreach far more than this one.

I did not see a none of the above option on the poll.

I don't even know what Symbian means! As for Apple the less said the better.

    JohnK,

I would think that the last option should cover you nicely.

I think its a fair question, why not an app for symbian, or for that matter blackberry or android, or better yet a generally available mobile interface. Make mine one that works on opera mini thanks.

According to Canalys Q2 stats - Android smart phone shipments grow 886% year-on-year in Q2 2010 (Canalys press release: r2010081) - Symbian still enjoys over 40% of the global smartphone market, although shrivelling steadily when compared with previous stats, followed by RIM, with the huge market share growth coming from Android. iphone market share has been static over the past 12 months.

I'm watching this market share race keenly as up to now I've been a symbian user. And then Mrs pineapple bought me a Nokia N97. Sometimes I love it. Other times I want to punch its little lights out. But it still leaves me untempted to buy an iphone.

I can’t speak for the site, but I think the majority of users here that have a mobile device they use to browse AFF, use an iPhone, or at least it’s the largest share. It probably helps that the owner, I have heard, also uses an iPhone, and there’s also the fact that developing specific apps for different devices costs money and only admin would know if he was going to see a potential return. I would assume he has seen the identifiers of the devices visiting this site and realised:

    • The highest percentages of mobile devices, and;
    • Out of those devices/members, who are currently paying for a subscription that would give them access to a mobile mode, and who aren’t.

From that he could work out if it’s worth the money.

But then, what do I know, I’m just offering up reasons why only iOS devices are supported. I don’t know anything beyond you or anyone else.

Yes, quite so, and from my user perspective a lot of the apps and widgets I've seen and discarded just duplicate what a mobile web site does - hence the mobile web site the better option.

Just looking at a back pay bonanza that's arrived in my bank account:D and it might be time to shell out for gold membership...

Agreed - as I've said somewhere before, all we need is a mobile version of a sign-in page. Simple: a graphic for AFF, a username field, a password field and a Submit button.

If login is successful and the member is a Silver or Gold subscriber (which I assume can be checked easily), the mobile skin of AFF is used (i.e. mobile mode).

If login is successful and the member is not a Silver or Gold subscriber, the default (non-mobile) skin of AFF is used.

If login is unsuccessful, just go back to the login page and repeat.

Mobile mode is already great as it is (although I can't remember trying to post with it; I assume it's alright). But the problem is that for us mobile users that want to get into mobile mode is that we need to load the full version of the website first, find the login box, login and then scroll to the bottom and find the skin chooser (either that or append the style argument to the URL after login).
