Book a QF PER - MELB return on red e-deal. Unfortunately need to cancel it due to work commitments. Can you please advise the best way to do this. As I understand it, there is a $38 fee to change the booking online, but can I upgrade to a full economy ticket and then get a full refund (effectively only $38 out of pocket)? Advise sought please?

I'm very sure you won't get a refund if you upgrade a fare then cancel. The cancellation conditions follow the ticket.

There are a few tricks you may be able to use (such as upgrading to a flexible fare without a change fee, then changing online when you need to travel again), but it's been ages since I've used them and I'm a bit rusty on the best way to handle it.

If you cancel online, you will get a credit into your FF account that you can later use to book from. If you involve the call centre, then additional fees etc will be involved.

Two ways:
  • First is to rebook the routing for different date(s), you must have the same or higher fare and the $38.50 is charge then and there.
  • Cancel the booking and you retain a credit for the fare paid. This is held against the booking reference. Rebook using this credit, again for the same or higher fare for any one-way or return trip ex Oz (Multi not available). The $38.50 will be charged at this time
Note that in any case, the credit will only be available for 1 year from the original booking date.

Here's the info you are presented with before cancelloing a red e-deal:
  • Valid for 12 months from the original booking creation date.
  • If not used within the 12 month validity period, the voucher value will be forfeited unless the original fare permits a refund.
  • Can only be used towards one way or return bookings for travel from or within Australia. Multi-city bookings are not permitted.
  • Are non-transferable. Name changes are not permitted.
  • Can be redeemed at qantas.com/yourbooking.
  • Any Change fees that were applicable to the original booking apply when redeeming the voucher.
  • Can only be used towards a fare of equal or higher value.
  • A Service fee will apply for vouchers redeemed through Qantas Telephone Sales.
