Just thought i'd share a bit of a TR for my recent tripping in & around Guangzhou, China, Hong Kong & finally old Manila town, leaving me shaken & stirred after being robbed.

My journey started from GC couple of weeks back for a quick jaunt to visit couple of factories for product sourcing in China, about the 6th trip in past 8 months, so I've kind of got it down pat.

Usual great consistent quality service on the BNE/SIN sector & transit to CAN. Was the lowest loading on this sector I have seen for a very long time, or any SQ flight for that matter, at least since around C.1992!
Very unusual to wake from a slumber to see an aircraft with only say at best 35%. FA mentioned that return loading from CAN was much higher. Surely I reasssured FA that SQ wont be suffering as a result..& from a passengers perspective I was so pleasant, being able to have some time to chat & soak up the ambience.
CAN airport is probably one of my least favourite- even though kind of new & modern -it always feels cold & harsh.
Immigration is always so effecient though so speedy process & taxi to my apartment in Guangzhou- GZ.

I still find GZ to be quite a daunting city, its big, brash with a conglomerate cluster of concrete on steroi_s, much the same as most other modern cities in China of today.
There are still a few certain pockets of charm to be found, with the nostalgic Shaiman Is of the old Canton.. I always find it fascinating wondering through here, & often wondering what the days of old were like as a city & for foreigners living here.
There are still pockets of greenery & parks around GZ with some beautiful area to relax.
Weather at this time can be cooler & much more pleasant than summer for exploring.
I usually stay in GZ to base myself to visit my source suppliers within ease of transport proximity.
It is always so convenient to travel in & around GZ by taxi, metro & CRH - regional trains works as well as Switzerland.
To avoid burnout syndrome, I usually combine my trips with few doses of R&R, somewhere new & convenient... Harbin was my favoured option, however time constraints left me with an option closer.
I was recently reading about a new Sheraton property opening close to GZ, on a Lion Lake- Mmm sounds enticing!
So off I was, coach out of GZ city, around an 1 hour & 30 mins, then a short taxi ride to a wonderful astonishingly grand & sparkling new resort hotel situated around a Lion Lake -without the lions!

I've seen my fair share of hotels over the years, but this was different.. very different, I was delightfully enlightened to be billeted in this arabian themed palace for the next couple of days...
I was told that it is only the 3rd days of official operatus, as the hotel had only just opened!
WOW.. About 10 mins stroll through the gilted lobby to my room overlooking the lake, I was joyous to spend the night in this 'virgin" room.. Spacious, beautifully decorated, although the arabian theme in China, was a kind of kitch.. It seemed to have worked in some weird way.
I had the chance to tour this property extensively.. The staff were also friendly & obliging to show this 'guilo" every feature of their proud palace!
I will try to post some photos for your viewing..
There are 4 wonderful restaurants, a great lobby lounge & fantastic spa facilities adorned within the confines of this property.
A couple of days later, well rested & fed & watered, I had to get back to reality of China.. Work to do..Sigh!
I left the property with a send off from the front office manager & service staff, great to see how some hotels appreciate one's business, understanding the circumstances.
So back to GZ it was, couple more visits to factories, quick trip to Shenzhen, & back on road to Hong Kong.

Looks pretty good.Another for the bucket list.Looking forward to the rest of the TR.

As I review the photos.. I still drool with memories of satisfaction about this place...

The beautiful structure & surroundings were complemented with the wonderful staff who were all so friendly & accommodating to every request.. Two thumbs up !!

There was one interesting element missing here, that is of a hotel crowded with guests.. I guess in time this will become prevalent within this resort, however it would be spacious enough to comfortably cater for large numbers without the crowded scene which appears in many cities & attractions of China.

So after retuning to GZ, I was off to Hong Kong..

My choice for the 140km journey, was by rail.. Have done the road, coach & air options, though I always find myself feeling comfortable enough on the train.. The rail journey is only a relaxing two hours to Hung Hom Station in Hong Kong, from where it is a short civilised high speed transfer to HKIA. Always love the in town check in facility at Kowloon Station.. less burden to deal with at the airport..

Used to do this back in the old Swiss Air MK I days from various stations around Switzerland.. It is a great feeling when you get to the airport & view everyone else struggling with their luggage.

My flight today is HKG/MNL on Philippine Airlines J , with the efficient check in angel assigning me 1K.

HKIA always seems so very busy, It is a wonderful facility that copes exceptionally well with large volumes of aircraft movements & passenger numbers. Wish Australia's major airports were up to this level.. I know... I shouldn't compare

Straight through immigration less than 10 mins, later directed to the lounge.

Philippine Airlines shares the lounge facility with several other carriers & is known as the CNAC VIP lounge

CNAC LOUNGE HKG.jpg

This is a great spacious & airy lounge facility occupying the upper levels affording a fantastic view of terminal & surrounding taxiways.
Food selection, just a tad on the light side, though plentiful supply of beverages & reading material.
This spacious lounge also has some relaxing areas, & dedicated work zones... brilliant idea.
From this vantage point can get a good overview of boarding gate for my flight
HKG Boarding gate.jpg

PR307 HKG/MNL 1800 DEP.

At this point I visualise that is is a full flight, with the usual jostling of 300+ odd Y pax at boarding gate early.

I haven't utilised the PR product for quite some time, as they have let me down in the past countless times, my criticisms always falling on deaf ears.

Anyway, time to forgive & knowledgable that I can relax without strict time regime today.. The PR 747 pulls up at the gate & we board for the short hop to MNL.
Always enjoy the lovely 'draught horse" of the 747 especially at the front..
We are greeted by Richie & Anthony who offer us a warm welcome & proceed to offer a drink of choice..
I see that this flight is offering J in lower & upper decks for this flight & we are offered to move if we wish to.
For myself 2 hours is such a short flight & comfortable with the arrangement.PR J Seat.jpg

Actual departure 1825

Considering work done for the week, I can relax, enjoying the ambience &..

Can't entirely recall the menu varieties.. Sure the pictures can do it some justice!

Probably rate it 6.5/10 for quality, taste & presentation..

All served in perfect time..

The seat on this aircraft is very comfortable & a spacious cabin. IFE is a little lacking on PR, & not at all user friendly.

My overall impression for this flight was quite good. Although not having the perfect refinement for menu & beverage variety & quality compared with other carriers, the crew made all the difference for this sector, offering professional, charming, authentically filipino friendliness.
I had a chat with the crew through out the flight complementing them on their service, & they felt very much appreciated.
This also instilled some confidence for me to fly with PR again, a product both hard & soft.. when it works... Is very much underrated, at the J end anyway.
Just wish PR would offer better consistancy & take business customers seriously..
Overall give the flight & experience 7.5/10

Arrived @ MNL T2 2015 - Pretty much on schedule!

So it is good old Manila town I find myself once again..

The one consulation is arriving by PR @ T2, the better terminal of the 3 air terminals in MNL. Within 20mins after arrival I find myself awaiting luggage at carousel.
Timed it perfectly today.. 43 mins after arrival outside T2 taking the taxi to my favourite haunt in Malate area.

For those who are familiar with Manila, I usually find Makati the best option for Manila accommodation. It is a better area, offering better hotels & dining & shopping opportunities.

However for myself, where evening live music is my preferred appetite, I find Malate more suited for my stay option this time around.

Now, I know Manila like the back of my hand.. There is no other city I have visited so often & or frequently within S.E. Asia.
It's a city you either love or hate, most sensibly sane people hate it.. It can be overwhelming, crowded, polluted, poverty can really get you down, not to mention the weird characters wandering about this jungle of a metropolis.
For me , It always holds an element of charm, nostalgic values, & mystery, a city that can never be taken lightly, "a wild beast that can never ever be tamed". Accept it as it is, warts & all..

A lovely stay as always at my favourite hotel.. & a welcome rest.

Several days later..

For this evening, I find myself in my favourite bar in Malate, minus the girls... for the record.. (It is not/never has been or will ever be on my agenda)
It is here that the bar staff know me so well by name, & drink with the chilled glass.. right temperature.. always perfect..
I enjoyed the ambience till & decided to visit another establishment to enjoy some food before meeting friends.
It is here on a street within surroundings I know all so very well that I was blatantly robbed by snatching & pick pocketed simultaneously..
Waiting for a taxi, my phone was snatched out of my hands, & my wallet was taken from my pocket. So fast..
Well... what a surprise, the wallet villian didn't get away so easily, I was quick enough to grab him, & teach him a physical lesson or 10 about violating basic human rights of a tourist. Think he ascertained, with injuries.. that he somehow chose the wrong target this time!!
As for the phone, well guess it was sold in the market for a few hundred or thousand pesos.
So be it ... Ho hum.. wont let it spoil my time or the 'charm" of Manila.. just always be ever so vigilant in most cities, particularly this one...
Actually to be perfectly honest I recall Mexico City having less desparados than the Manila of 2012...
Guess it can happen anywhere though..
Spent the best part of the following day visiting the police booth for a follow up, then the police station, then the police HQ for the appropriate police report.
Had to animate the events several times over to several officers, Detectives, & Colonel who throughout nick named me 'Chuck Norris"
Well, at the time.. try Bruce Willis, Jacky Chan & Jet Li rolled into one.. But the villian still escaped into the night, likes the rats as big as cats running through the police HQ as I was explaining the event.
The wonderful assisting police at Manila HQ kept me entertained for the afternoon, whilst i was waiting for my report to be verified, checked, rechecked, printed & officially stamped.
They were delighted to hear of all my adventures throughout the Philippines over the years.. The biggest surprise to them was that I didn't have tattoos, &/or come to Philippines to chase girls.. No, I explained.. rather they chase me... but I charge them too much they claim... That's the best way to rid them.
I am "no love you long time" I always explained in no easy terms...
By the end of the afternoon, the Police were being wonderfully entertained & proceeded to invite me to a Videoke/Karaoke kind of bar at the back of the police HQ... Now this is getting quite interesting.. I guess I would be safe & enjoy the priveleges of at least 10 officers in civil uniforms to accompany me.
I decided to decline as I had a prior appointment, have put a raincheck on the rendevous though.
Will be interesting for my next visit.. Not sure if they favour my Cold Chisel karaoke numbers though.. Saw a police shoot through the ceiling after he wasn't getting favourably served in one of these establishments once before, it gets kind of messy..

Wow... I travel in Asia extensively for business but have somehow managed to put off/delay/get out of visiting Manila so far. I'm going to have to go sooner or later but must admit it makes me a little nervous. Having said that Delhi really shocked me the first time (and I thought I was ready for it) but I've been several times now and have got used to it so I guess its just those first few times that really hit home.

thanks for the TR, much enjoyed! :)
