From December 2018, Qantas will add additional A330 services from SYD-SIN and SYD-CGK, and an additional B738 service from SYD-NOU: QANTAS ADDS MORE FLIGHTS TO ASIA-PACIFIC ROUTES

The SIN lounge is going to become an absolute zoo...

  • From 14 December, a third Sydney-Singapore service (QF83/84) will be added on Mondays, Fridays and Sundays.^ This brings the total Sydney-Singapore services to 17 per week, up from 14 previously.
  • From 13 December, the Sydney-Jakarta services (QF41/42) will increase from five to six weekly, with the additional service operating on Thursdays.^
In addition, Qantas will increase its Sydney-Noumea service from three to four times weekly from 12 December 2018, using its Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The additional service will operate on Wednesdays.^

^subject to government and regulatory approvals.

New SIN services (QF83/84) do not offer more choices in timing as they depart just before/after the existing flights (QF1/82)...

My thoughts exactly. It seems like a missed opportunity to offer a more diverse schedule, e.g. a redeye SYD-SIN with a day return. Why have 3 daily flights that all leave within a few hours of each other?

So QF doesn't have to open the SIN lounge in the morning I guess?

With SYD curfew?
Say it left at 2200, it would arrive at 0430ish. Probably not that popular with leisure travellers and business with extra day accomm costs.

Out of MEL it would be okay, leave about 0000 and arrive at 0630 intime for business meetings etc.

Problem is the Sydney curfew.
Means a 3-4am SIN arrival.

At the moment only Scoot as TR13 is operating such a flight departing 3 days a week at 8.45pm and arriving 3.15am.

SQs latest is currently SQ242 at 6pm, only 2 hrs after QF1

I realise the curfew in Sydney is an issue, but it could still work. If the flight left SYD at, say, 22:30 it would arrive around 5am. This won't suit everyone but it would surely suit enough people to fill 3 of the 17 weekly flights from SYD to SIN? Onward 3K connections are also available in the morning to destinations like KUL, SGN, BKK, HAK, HKT and RGN.

The return flight could depart SIN around 8am - no curfew issues there and some will prefer the day flight back from Asia.

Great news as those Singapore flights are chockers. Not so great news for lounge lizards though in Singapore.

Nothing wrong with a late departure out of SYD arriving SIN early morning. Allows a whole day to connect to the rest of SE Asia.

Perth Airport killed the Perth-Joburg flights by picking a fight with Qantas on terminal usage and so Sydney picks up the flights. Nice one... sigh.

While I'm disappointed by this too, I think its a little unfair to just blame the airport. Qantas were being stubborn too.

So route a late night SYD departure via CBR or BNE.

I'm assuming there are issues with time slots and SYD's curfew as some of you are mentioning, but this x3 time weekly flight from SYD it's not adding variety at all. No AUS-SIN flights overnight or early AM flights that could provide more flexibility and competition against other carriers. That lounge is going to be continuing to have issues.

On the other hand, win for Noumea, more options for a good holiday/status run!
