I am going to be completely discriminating here, which might offend some, but I am married to an Indonesian and she will also agree with me on this point.
Indonesians in general tend be pretty slack about rules/guidelines/ettiquette, observe they way orderly queing just does not happen there, especially from those who consider themselves to be above others. Compliance with the airlines recommendation to wear seatbelts while seated would be very low even when the sign is on, so I am not surprised at the number of injuries.

p.s. I love indonesians.

My 2c is that as a westerner, we regularly have it thrown at us to buckle up and use seatbelts, speed kills etc so we might be more inclined to keep our seatbelt on. Even our coach buses have seat belts so I think we are more exposed to the dangers of travelling and not using seat belts.

Yep that all makes sense. Indonesians dont normally wear the seat belts in cars either (but in recent years thats changing), but always drive with the car doors locked for security, and never ever have the windows down.

You being discriminating here :) In my experience this is a common problem across many developing nations. China, Vietnam, India, even Thailand are just a few of the many countries where seatbelts seem to be entirely option (in terms of actually wearing them, whether required or not). , whether on a plane, or other mode of transportation.

To be fair to Indonesians, quite a few Australians are not much better. They may well wear their seatbelts for the entire flight, but when in Indonesia many are happy to zip around on scooters without a helmet. Which I ask is riskier?

Yep! but there is a massive difference between attitudes within those countries you mentioned, and I am not going to touch in the reasons for that here.

i chatted with my indo in laws today, we have a garuda captain in the family, i was trying to get some inside info (he knows nothing, except that he flew in 30 mins before). the first thing his wife said "we dont wear seat belts" - i didn't even prompt her!

Re: ABC Just in news of Emirates flight experiencing tubulence

The turbulence also caused damage to cabin storage areas, the airline said.

I wonder if this coincide with the passenger injuries? Heads being used as wrecking balls against overhead luggage bins?

Re: ABC Just in news of Emirates flight experiencing tubulence

Pity we can't show a movie of this in the safety brief, then nobody would ever undo their belts. People have no idea of the violence of one of these events. You're not gently thrown into the air (as per the NASA vomit comet). The aircraft comes down and smashes you on the head, and then to finish the job it comes back up again, and hits you from below. Both are likely to be impacts of greater than 2g, so it's easy to see how bones (and cabin fittings) are broken.

I agree. I have suffered a couple of incidents - an emergency braking that threw everything forward, and some bad turbulence that made things hit the ceiling. Would never have understood it without experiencing it. But would such truths put passengers off flying?

They need to bring back the FLYING HIGH scene for the simple folk to relate?
