On Foreign Correspondent tonight will be Part 2 of the story about the Australian businessmen jailed in Dubai after a property deal went bad.

Australian businessmen Marcus Lee and Matt Joyce fell out amid Dubai corruption ordeal

It will probably be available on iView later.

Tangential interest for flyers through/into Dubai:

The program concludes its investigation of Dubai's tortuous criminal justice system and the serious traps it holds for unsuspecting visitors, who now include many more Australians due to Qantas's route deal with Dubai's Emirates airline.

"I know people laugh, 'Oh look, you can get thrown in jail for kissing or something like that' and think it's all a myth, but it happens," Mr Lee said.

"It really does happen. One of the guys when I was in jail, he was in there because he was transiting through Dubai Airport with a breast cancer awareness t-shirt, and it had a silhouette of a female.

"Somebody took offence and he was in jail. I was in there with him, so I've seen this."

Caveat viator !

Indeed.

"Don't say you weren't warned"

I went to Dubai once and have no intention of ever setting foot there again, not even the airport.

I watched part one with interest as we were about to depart for Dubai. Wouldn't want to live there, no excuse for the poor way that the two men were treated. However we both enjoyed our time in Abu Dahbi, Dubai and Sharjah. There didn't seem to be any problems but yes we wouldn't walk down the road arm in arm or showing lots of flesh, especially my wife. Sharjah is particularly strict, however down at the beach area in Dubai anything seemed to be acceptable.

oh dear, this old chestnut...

When will people learn that some countries have much more strict laws/customs and you have to respect this when travelling.
I'm not saying that there aren't genuine instances where someone isn't doing anything wrong but still gets nabbed.. But this happens everywhere including in Aus.

Yes, of course. But the issue in this forum is that dear old Qantas delivers us into this country, without choice for us if you want to travel Qantas to Europe, like many do and like many will continue to do without giving the possible consequences a second thought. That's why programs such as this Foreign Correspondent program (if anyone watches it!) is useful in bringing the issue forward, again, so that people can know the pitfalls and so consider the many other choices available besides their Old Faithful, Qantas.

And I think a major point of the ABC program is that its NOT just like getting 'nabbed' in Australia.

Watched this tonight (also saw part 1 last week) and it does not paint the prettiest of pictures re DXB. Admittedly there are many places around the world where you can have issues, but interestingly Marcus Lee made specific mention of a guy he met in jail who was there because he wore a t-shirt supporting breast cancer research which had a 'silhouette' of a woman on it. This was in transit at the airport, but apparently someone took offence and complained.
I haven't seen the t-shirt in question, and TBH I wouldn't wear anything 'risky' in that part of the world, but really, jail for such a thing?
