Appreciate your wisdom on the following:

While WP I have about 90,000 miles on AAdvantage account, and Mrs Paddy has 80,000 after 40,000 were purchased :)

A couple of questions:

1. I've upgraded my J to F on a future LAX - LHR flight, about 3 weeks ago. Unlike QF who deduct miles immediately from your account on suspicion you might be successful, AA approve on the spot :p but haven't deducted any miles yet  Do the miles only get deducted when you fly?

2. I want to purchase an F award to US for Mrs Paddy - can I use points in my account for one leg and points in Mrs Paddy's account for the return leg?

As always appreciate your assistance in advance.

Paddy

(1) Qantas only ever deducts points when the points upgrade is processed. For international flights this tends to be at around the T-12 mark.

(2) For the AA flights which I have upgraded with points (they call them miles) from my AA account, the points are deducted when the ticket is reissued which tends to be 1-2 days after the upgrade is processed.

have you received (by email) the new ticket from AA which shows the upgraded class? It is normally at this point that AA deducts the points. AA also sends a second email to the AA Frequent FLyer Account holder advising them that a reward has been used from their account.

(3) - your question 2. - yes - just tell AA Brisbane that that is what you want to do. You also need to have the other AA Frequent Flyer Account holder with you and they will be asked verification questions like what is their registered, address & phone number and how many AA points do they have?

Thanks for your quick response.

The DONE4 ticket was issued by Qantas here in Sydney with a number of AA segments. I then called AA in Brisbane and requested the upgrade from J to F on the LAX - LHR flight. Everything looks fine in both reservation systems now reflecting the upgrade. Even though that was a week ago no points have been deducted and I'm getting hopeful :p:shock:

Good news about booking Mrs Paddy's flights - thanks for that.

The reservation system is reflecting the reservation only. For the upgrade process to be completed, the ticket needs to be re-issued. You will have a new ticket number after the re-issue and it will begin with 001 instead of the original QF ticket starting with 081. When the ticket is re-issued, the miles will be deducted and you will receive an e-ticket receipt by email.

But do note that the re-issue of a QF ticket by AA can take a while to process. I have had "problems" with upgrade reissues on several occasions. All were eventually sorted out and the ticket reissued. But its not always a smooth process.

If you have not received the email and have not had the miles deducted in a few days, I recommend you contact AA to find out why the ticket has not been reissued.

Many thanks for the responses. Will chase up QF and AA
