What To Do If You're Threatened Over Onboard Photography? - One Mile at a Time

Has anyone experienced this in Oz (or flights in and out of Oz)? This sounds bizarre since I would've thought that this potentially free advertising for the airline over social media, but weirder things have happened..

I would be annoyed if it was a J or F flight that I am taking as part of an experience (I am generally a whY flyer unless I use points to upgrade/redeem)..

I have absolutely no problem of people taking a photo of their seat and immediate area for their personal memories etc

BUT...... I am going to get burnt here and I have my flame suit on,

Nothing gives me the pooh's more than someone wandering around the plane taking random photos of this, that and the other, and especially the food on offer, the drinks that they can get and the drinks other classes can get (includes the size of the plastic drink container supplied on a few QF flights) and then the comments (invariably negative) associated with these photos and admitted to the world of social media.

OK, burn me now, Rant over

Maybe just a security thought

Just after take-off I go to the lavatory and after exiting, I snap a picture of the main entrance/inflight refreshment area at door 2L/R.

Wow, it doesn't surprise me though, some flight attendants go crazy with power over their interpretation of "the rules"

I had no problems taking some photos of the seat on AA73 last week. Didn't take any of the "cabin" though.

I've never had a problem taking photos on AA.
Obviously depends on FAs.

Had nil issues generally, I have snapped whole cabins and FA's at the front. However I do it discreetly so not to annoy anyone. It's great when your phone is a great camera. Generally harder to do if just a great camera and no phone.

I think it's fine. However in my line of work I'm often with/escorting very high profile public personalities and I have asked people who I suspect to be taking photos of them without permission rather than the F seat, to politely PO and get a life :)

It's a difficult area. I have no issue at all with someone taking some happy snaps of their seat or their wife/husband etc etc. I often do the same.

However.... Some really stretch the friendship. Even this week, I was in the Sydney Amex lounge and a man was wandering around taking photos of every possible corner (including a few "location" shots that basically just captured me and my partner sitting at the centre bar. That's when it starts to get a bit intrusive.

Same onboard, years ago I was FO on a domestic service and while the captain jumped out to do a walk around, a disembarking passenger asked one of the flight attendants if they could have a look at the flight deck. I said it was fine and the guy came in with an impressive SLR and quickly began snapping pictures of literally every panel and component of the flight deck.

Unfortunately, the actions of a small few ruin it for the masses.

OK, I'll oblige - but only with a small candle flame I hope.

Not sure why the objection to people taking photos of parts of the plane where they aren't seated. Do you mean objecting to the fact that there might be other passengers in these photos, or is it the act of taking the photo per se? That said, I don't think I've ever seen any anyone roaming around taking photos as you describe, so I may not appreciate the issue fully. And I don't look at 'social media' (unless you include AFF :) )

Presumably a whY pax taking pics in business wouldn't post 'invariably negative' comments?

As for security implications of taking a pic of the entry/inflight refreshment area ... (hang on, let me turn up the flame a bit here to two candles) ... sorry, I think that's drawing a very long bow. I'm pretty sure any one of the many 'airline' shows happily show airline-sanctioned video of almost every part of the plane, including the entry area (and even the coughpit).

I rest in the comfortable knowledge that I'm possibly the least photogenic object in the sky, so know that there will rarely be a camera aimed at me. :)

Flying QF back from CNS at the end of the last AFF Gathering I took a snap down the aisle from my seat (1C) of 3 AFF members in 4C, 4D and 5C. Immediately I was set upon by the FA for taking photos of other people without their permission, which I thought was a bit rich considering any photo you take you're bound to have someone in the background you haven't sought permission from for the photo.

The rest of the flight I then had a grumpy CSM serving me, though she didn't ask me to delete the photo and she technically wasn't aware I knew the 3 pax who could be seen in the photo, but it did feel pretty awful being chastised for something that has never been a problem before.

A similar telling off happened in 2013 in ROK when I (incorrectly, admittedly) used my camera on the apron to photograph a plane in the sunset. I stopped for a mere moment to take the snap as I was walking to my plane, and was immediately set upon when boarding about how I should know better and treated pretty filthily. I knew I shouldn't have used an electronic device on the apron, but after seeing so many others do it and get away with it, I wanted my own photo. I took it on the chin though, as I kept the photo and it was stunning. That said, I think sometimes FA's can go a little nuts when laying down the law, rather than simply saying, don't do this again.

Great photo Sam. Is it a problem using a camera or phone to take photos whilst walking across the Tarmac? Every man and his dog takes photos walking to and from the plane at ZQN

I don't have a problem with photographer, but I hope people respect my privacy and not take photos every time I am in public.

I'm starting to get sick of it.

I think the article needs to be read in context. There was no issue with the photography until such time as pictures were taken of the forward entry (flightdeck) area.

AA's policy on photography is pretty clear.

The photographer probably overstepped the mark.

As for the more general rule of taking photos on board - I think it is wise to respect people's privacy. There is zero reason to ever need to take a picture with someone else's face in it without their express consent for you to do so. Taking pictures without faces, or of your own seat/food - knock yourself out :)

Your a celebrity so of course you will be photographed more.

Yep, as others have posted, this guy didn't get in trouble for taking a photo of his seat or his premium experience, as is suggested time and time again. He went and started taking photos of doors and stuff. The reaction he got was clearly triggered by his actions - it was not some "power trip" or whatever other nonsense people try to throw at the staff.

As for general photos that include other people - I am no celebrity, but I do not like being photographed by strangers. Just my personal feeling. And even more so I dislike people taking photos that include my children.

I am with you on getting photographed by strangers juddles. And the same applies to all of my relatives.
They can choose not a stranger.
