I had booked First Class tickets from Lax to Newark and a return from Washington DC to Lax. Due to ill health I had to cancel. When I rang AA they told me the fares were not refundable but a credit would be available for a new fare until February 19. I asked if I could use the credit towards a codeshare on Qantas as i was thinking of going to NZ from Sydney this year. The rep told me that the credit could only be used on fares originating in the US. I have tried to find the T& Cs to confirm this without success. I booked the fares on the AA Australian site using AUD. Is there anyone with some experience similar to mine that might shed some light on this for me. Thanks in advance

Years ago I had AA airfares booked for travel to mexico (from the US) + some US domestic flights. 3 days before I was due to leave the swine flu broke out and I was advised not to travel to mexico as all the tourist attractions were closed.

AA gave me a credit (valid for 12 months) and waved the changed booking fee, but the credit had to be used on airfares booked via the AA website on AA flights (not code share) and yes originating in the US as my original flights had originated and completed in the USA.

My original flights into and out of US were with Qantas, also credited and change fee waved.

So my original ticketing was:
QF SYD-DFW
AA DFW-MEX
AA CAN-DFW
AA DFW-SFO
QF SFO-SYD

I ended up travelling 6 months later:
QF SYD-HNL
AA HNL-SFO
AA SFO-JFK
QF JFK-SYD
with small cash payment for differences in fares.

So in my experience if you have AA credits from flights that were originally departing the US the credit has to be used the same way. But you may be able to use the credit of a AA flight departing AUS to US, as this is still their metal.

thanks I will look into that

I faced a similar situation earlier this year albeit in reverse, where I had a credit for a cancelled AKL-SYD-LAX-JFK one-way trip, and the validity period of the credit was about to expire (I'd booked it 10 months in advance, cancelled a few days prior, and only had 2 months to fly any replacement trip).

I wanted to use the credit to fly a domestic trip in F within the US.. but I completely forgot that AA don't allow you to change your origin country, as mentioned above. So, I ended up using the credit for a cheap one-way trip in Y with AKL as the origin, and they refunded me the balance as a paper voucher that was good for another 12 months.

Just leaving that bit of information there in case it's of any use ;)

Yes, made for part of a status run :D. And if it wasn't clear from my previous post, the paper voucher is good for any AA itinerary with any origin, any codeshares etc.
