I'm interested to see that every couple of weeks or so an A330 is scheduled on the QF765 route from Sydney to Adelaide.

Any insight on this? Maybe a repositioning or offsetting the capacity lost by other flights downgrading to 717s?

Edit: not sure why the title was forced to lowercase

Any particular day of the week? Matching capacity to demand presumably.

They did it last year - I am sure they are next Friday and the Monday before Australia Day. I am certain it has something to do with the Tour Down Under bike race.

uh oh I can see someone getting excited then upset if they sub it at the last minute.....

767 anyone? :D

I don't know about the A330 scheduling. I know they often used to fly a 767 from ADL - SYD on weekdays departing about 1600 or so. Presumably catering for those flying back home after working in ADL for the day.

Well, who ever else who loves the 330 will be gleeful to be able to get on to that flight.
It was a 767 ADL - MEL that was my one and only one, few years ago now, at the old ADL dom airport, ...
Remember that revolving door as you walked from the walkway off the plane to the terminal?
Or walking up that extra tall staircase to get to door of the 767.
Edit: Anna, that was when QF did the 767 from ADL to DRW and back, went on for quite a long time.
But I am quite wry about that 330, in the end, QF could again swap it to 2 or 3 737s.
Not believing it until I see it land, but my Fri and Mon prior to Australia Day PH (Tue) is busy, so even if it did come and go, I am not able to get it.
But paws crossed, 11 Jun 16, late evening in J on the QF 330 from MEL - SYD, I be so happy if they don't swap that particular one.
IF RR can do her special magic, I am sure quite a number of lovers of the QF 330 will be most pleased, no equipment swaps for the day the OP (not me for once) will be taking the flight!

Its due to go out back out to SYD as QF774 with dinner service, at 19:10 to to SYD at 21:20, so who ever can nab that, its asking $189 in whY or $769 in J for the 25 Jan 16.
Good time to watch the sun set on the flight for those who can take it.
I just might do it if some $$$ came my way, but Jan is usually a money tight time for me.

Re the tour down under bike thing, I just got this email from QF as I have a MEL-ADL r/t during this period:

Travelling with a bike

Hello,
We’re expecting a large number of customers to travel with bikes for the Santos Tour Down Under between Saturday 16 January and Sunday 24 January, 2016. If you’ll be one of them, here are some tips on how to make your journey easier for you and your bike.
Let us know before you fly
It’s important you visit qantas.com and login to Your Booking to let us know you’re travelling with sporting equipment so we can make the appropriate arrangements.
On the day of your flight
Arrive at the airport with plenty of time to check-in your bike.
There is no additional cost to travel with a bike unless it exceeds your ticketed baggage allowance.
How to prepare your bike
To be accepted onto a Qantas flight your bicycle must be suitably packed in a bike box. You can buy these from most Australian Qantas Terminals or you can travel with your own bike box, however it must not exceed the dimensions detailed on qantas.com.
As you might expect there is limited capacity in the aircraft hold for bulky items. For this reason, and dependent on other cargo, we cannot guarantee your bike will travel with you on your booked flight, however we would expect it to travel on the next available flight.
Thanks,
Regards,
Qantas

good work by QF I reckon

Use to be that 767s would do the 2pm and often 3 pm SYD-ADL flights (761 and 763 maybe). Those aircraft seemed to depart ADL to DRW (during the dry season) and PER, IIRC. Scheduling a big plane for the bikes make sense. But the OP did mention this happening every few weeks. I'd guess the aircraft might fly to DRW during the dry season.

I'll have to mark them down. I got the same email about taking a bike for luggage. Thing is I fly out of ADL at the start of the bike race and fly back to ADL at the end of the race. Thanks Qantas, but I probably don't want to take my bike to the santos tour down under since I'll not be in ADL. :D

Yes, I guess if your trip starts in ADL that makes sense

At least they've targeted bookings involving ADL - can't fault them for making an effort to communicate.

Kind of reminds me of a targeted (!) email I had from United a year or so back telling me all about how wonderful Melbourne is and why I should fly there on their 787. Uh, hello... my address is in MEL, and all my flights depart MEL or SYD... common sense suggests I know all about it :) Did give me a giggle and a bit of a smh moment

This in interesting to know. One of my pet hates about flying in and out of Adelaide is that whoever you fly, it's a dinky 737.

One of my 2016 New Year resolutions was to abandon Virgin and come back grovelling to Alan's airline after an affair lasting several years but becoming very average last year. This just value adds to my decision.
