Targeted email received this morning

A special thank you with 100% bonus miles
We wanted to help boost your Dividend Miles balance for 2014, by giving you a special thank you offer. This means if you buy 40,000 miles, you will get 80,000 miles. Or gift the miles and help family or friends travel sooner!
Hurry, offer ends January 31, 2014

There's only so many miles that a person can buy!

I got it too. But is it limited to the about you bought or gifted last year? I only bought 2,000 miles last year to try trigger an offer!

I got the offer. Very strange timing. I actually wouldn't be surprised if there was another share bonus before March 30 given how completely random their promos have been since the merger was announced.

I got it too and the T&Cs at the end of the email say this:

100,000 DM would cost US$1,881.25 (~AU$2030 as of this morning).

FWIW, the cost to share 50,000 DM is US$567.50 (~AU$615) - I'll wait for a possible share promotion.

If anyone wants to attempt an ambitious GUM redemption with an Asian stopover for 30k there has never been a better time to do it! Check the succesfull bookings thread for routing ideas!

Although I wouldn't be surprised if they did another share promo it is pretty unlikely. They have historically been once every 18 months so to do 2 in the second half of last year is very unusual. I think the promos will slow considerably once US leaves *A as they will be concentrating on integrating programs rather than promoting a program that is being wrapped up (and AA won't wan't 'AA miles' being sold so cheaply as no-one would bother buying AA miles in their own program).

You can wait but I wouldn't be risking it. I'm hoping AS steps up their promos next year - they have a very interesting FF program with all sorts of redemption partners.

I am taking a long term view in regard to AAdvantage amalgamation - no intention of any DM redemption (*A or anything else).

So, for me there is no risk. If no future share promotions then so be it ... :D

Does anyone happen to know re; the T&C's whether I can purchase 50K (receive 50K bonus) and Gift 50K to a friend (receive 50K bonus)?

Or Can I just pick up 50K only?

you can gift as many times as you want, the limit is on the account receiving the bonus.

I *think* the bonus is limited to how many points each account receives, regardless of who buys or gifts them (so you could gift 10 different people 50k each and they would each receive the bonus).

If only I new how things would be working afte the merger I'd be tempted to buy some more miles for a holiday next year in march.

I'm really hoping that USDM can be used for O/W travel. Works a lot better for the kind of travel I do.

Got till the end of the month to make up me mind.

Huh, most of it is already published, including the fact USDM will transfer eventually to AA at 1:1. I think its a good chance to stock up in preference to buying AA promos if redemption needs are not immediate.

Yes, but it's the known unknowns like AA devaluation, or 1World partners tightening up on award flights due to the huge influx of USDM miles.

A devaluation I could sort of wear, since it probably still works out to be good value for J/F flights, but partners restricting award availability might not be so good, especially considering the limited options we have in Australia.

I've already got 100K USDM for hopefully a trip from North America to South America next year.

Possibly AS will be the better reward system in future for buying miles??

------------

I've never had an AA account, but are they similar to LM in that all award bookings are done online?

Restrictions on who gets what reward seats is a *Alliance trend more so than One World, AA redemption is online and easy, in fact you don't even need a membership to use and browse reward options.
