I have heard the old “we can’t open the real champagne on the ground due to customs / duty” line in the US before. Pretty poor for First ...

But being denied a sparkling WATER before takeoff with this excuse ... that really is just taking the Mickey?

Which airline took the honors and was it in the USA

Qantas ... I suspect the OP was in First.
They call business first in the US, and have flown the occasional AA the A321 with all three classes and their real version of Domestic first. on mainly flights form or to West to East.

Though the issues with Champagne has come up time and time again flying AA and Delta across the Atlantic Pond.

My experience is Qantas in first always serve before wheels up the likes of : Tattinger Compts Blanc de Blanc

This has nothing to do with US carriers or Champagne.

It seems the OP was denied water (sparkling) in First on a Qantas flight.
If this is the case my jaw just dropped and rebounded hard off the floor,

Sparkling water is loaded in the bar carts. Bar carts cannot be opened on flights departing the US whilst on the ground.

This seems an odd one and maybe clarification from OP is needed? I don't recall asking for sparkling water on QF in First before departure, still water yes but not sparkling. In EK F there is the Perrier loaded in the minibar which you can drink while still on the ground.

It was First on QF12. I've had it before no problem departing the US on QF First, and the explanation given was "we can only do that if a bottle is already open". Pretty cheap not to want to pay duty on a bottle of sparkling water??

In that case, a suggestion for our esteemed carrier. In FIRST, (FFS), load some sparkling water off the bar carts.

But what if you wanted juice or coke, or.. just about anything else that is on the bar carts... And often tightly packed away.

Most other soft drinks on the A380 can be accessed from the self service bar at the back and juice for first class is loaded in a seperate location that can be opened.

The problem isn't soft drinks or juice, there is no duty on that, it's the alcohol which is in these carts and pretty much every bar cart has alcohol.

Absolutely disgusting. Since having major surgery some years ago it is very difficult for me to swallow still water, it feels like swallowing concrete. So I must have sparkling water. Being denied sparkling water like that is a very poor decision by Qantas and a PR disaster.

I agree that a simple desire such as sparkling water should be catered for in first. But I also understand there are a whole lot of other issues the airline must tackle. I really doubt it has anything to do with the cost.

Seems accurate so me. OP was denied water in first class. The fact that they were later granted it doesn't magically undo the original denial.

And before you split hairs on (sparkling) water, there are plenty of places (eg in Europe) where sparkling is more commonly served than still - south america also springs to mind, where you will be asked "com ou sem gás?".

Title is slightly clickbaity, but no lie.

I really doubt it has anything to do with the cost.

It is all to do with the cost.

As a related example, QF do not offer Champagne/Sparkling as a PDB in Domestic J due to 'licencing restrictions' when their opposition does. The only reason QF do not get the necessary permits etc is due to cost (or possibly their contempt of their pax)...

I understand the feeling of failure - I get that. Do enough travel to really feel that across the spectrum.

Vote with your feet! If other airlines are so good, go with them !
