The news is simply appalling. Fancy 8 million Mexican's running around. STOP procreating now ...or preferably yesterday! Have you lot never heard of birth control? The lounges will be intolerable. :(

Very happy for that number of people to be in Melbourne.

This isn't particularly new - most capital cities in Australia have forecasts suggesting a high rate of population growth by 2035/2050 etc...

No they don't. Read the story!

Are you using this quote as the basis to your response, as that doesn't disprove what I have mentioned. All it suggests that SYD has a slower rate of growth compared to MEL.
If the city was in a population race with Sydney, the Harbour City would be left for dead. Melbourne is currently growing by 126,000 people a year, while the NSW rival is adding 90,000.

My comment still stands that these forecasts are nothing new

I wonder what the timeline will be for a train to the airport in 2050?

:)

Ironically, if Melbourne weren't growing so fast then it wouldn't have so many pressing infrastructure needs and the damn thing would have been built already.

The scary thing is, I wonder if anyone is actually worried. Skybus is evidently in the "seat", so why would anyone imagine any different into the future?

Surely the people in the know, are planning for the future ... just like they should have in the '80's? Blind Freddie knew we (I was a Melburnian in the early 80's) knew we needed a reliable and cost effective airport transport in the 80's! Now, 30 + years done the track, something has changed?

Call me pessimistic Hvr, but I'm glad I now live in Qld!

Oh, 8 million ... I was feeling sorry for the 8 metre Melbournians on long-haul!

My father was an agricultural scientist. He died over 30 years ago. But, he was already saying that the country had exceeded it's load bearing capability.

I've driven in Los Angeles traffic jams, gone around buses in Manhattan through Times Square, driven around Milan, Florence, Amsterdam, Brussels, Luxembourg, Zurich and numerous others.

None of them are as bad as driving through Melbourne now during day time off-peak periods.

Twenty years ago I used to easily drive from Dandenong to Footscray every day - often along Spencer St in Melbourne - and it would take about an hour.

Melbourne's future is total gridlock.

Renato

we've hit the Australian population that was forecast about 15 years ago to be reached around 203X

Melbourne’s population surged by an insane 556,000 in the five years to 2016, and by 1.1 million people over the past 12 years.

Fresh government data shows that 14 of Melbourne’s 16 metropolitan train lines were less punctual in 2017 than they were in 2001.

There are 237 million people using the metropolitan network a year, up from 130 million people in 2000.

Infrastructure Victoria’s Managing Transport Demand report has forecast that 19.2 per cent of Greater Melbourne’s road network will be at high capacity in 14 years, up from the current level of 15.8 per cent.

We need to build the equivalent of a Canberra every year just to keep up with population growth, 62% of which is net overseas migration.

According to the ABS, Australia’s population rose by 1.63% in the year to September 2017 to be way above the 35-year average. The growth in the number of persons in the year to September 2017 was an insane 395,700, up 25,300 on the same quarter of last year and 127,310 above the 35-year average. Victoria continues to be the population ponzi king, with its population growth at 2.37%, whereas population growth into New South Wales is also running at 1.58% in the year to September 2017. In the year to September 2017, Victoria added 147,424 new residents, whereas New South Wales added 123,1056 new residents. The majority of those new residents settled in Melbourne and Sydney.

Having lived in Manhattan recently I can guarantee you that NY traffic is worse than if Melbourne and Sydney were suddenly just dropped on top of each other :)

As stated not new. If half the annual immigrants move to Melbourne that's 100,000. Multiply by 32 years to 2050 and you get 3,200,000 just in that.

Maybe he was talking in terms of the then-current economic climate?
Because we still export most of the food we produce, and on top of that we waste HEAPS more.
