Title pretty much sums it up - have a flight landing into MEL at 0820 (from BNE) and departing MEL for HKG at 0940 - both on VA in J. Is this going to be pushing it? All on the same PNR so not worried about losing $ if the domestic flight is delayed but it'll mess up plans in HKG. If I miss my flight to HKG there aren't any others with VA or partners that day and I will miss out on the hotel I've booked - I'm assuming travel insurance covers that?

Thanks

Depends on your policy and the reason for the delay. It might also cost more to pay the claim excess than a night at the hotel is worth.

It's situational. If it's critical and you can't afford a delay then make the change.

If you're on time 80mins is probably fine.

In May I had a 90min connection time on a BNE>Intl connection. That lined up with another flight then a prepaid hotel and the start of a big holiday. Makes me uncomfortable just thinking about it. I changed the flight and glad I did.

Another instance returning Intl>Syd Dom. Was delayed, missed the flight and had to hang around a few hours. No big deal because there were no critical plans.

THe difference between SYD, BNE to MEL is MEL is all under one roof. No need to wait around and catch buses. DOM to INT is about 5-10 minute walk depending on the VA arrival gate into MEL.

For something that early, and with only one flight a day, I would overnight in MEL at the Ibis Budget Melbourne Airport, which I have done many times.
But thats me.
Though Terminals 2 and 3 are close by, and you would have BP for the trip all the way, and bags would be interlinked, you are close to call esp with outgoing Immi and outgoing security checks.
Even if express path is in use, its still very very close to call.

So did it today and even with arriving on time it only left about 5 mins before boarding started. The line at customs was insane, as was the GST claim back (skipped that). Thanks anyway for all the advice. I must admit I would way rather having more time to kick back in the lounge than rushing.

Watch out is that VA can dump you randomly in T4 as well / adds at least another 5-10!
