First experience as platinum, yes got the bulkhead aisle seat as requested with a spare seat between me and the window passenger, only problem was that it was not really at the bulkhead but rather the second row in Y just behind the three curtained off crew rest seats.

Therefore at ticketing (both at check in and at the lounge), should they have known this, or was it something that the crew rest seats are totally removed from the system and therefore it appears like the bulkhead to the ticketing staff.

BTW, first experience as a platinum - F Lounge at LAX TBIT, small, crowded, internet not working well and food much the same as J Lounge, together with the experience of the seat assignment - guess things can only get better from here!

Lounges overseas are rarely up to those at home when it comes to facilities etc.

So I guess in NRT use the JL F Lounge, and HKG the CX F Lounge etc with a QF number. Is this why Qantas upgraded the SIN lounges, no other OW alliance there?

SIN lounge is a joint QF/BA lounge for both business and first

F lounge at LAX is a well-known shocker. And they still haven't got decent internet? That's years now... How hard can it be?

the difference here is between the 'first row' and 'bulkhead'. a review of the detailed seat map would have shown your seats behind the dedicated crew rest area, although the seat map for choosing seats would not (as the crew seats don't appear).

at check-in at an outstation it may not be apparent that your seat was behind a crew rest area. I would hope that would be picked-up if you were checking-in at an Australian international gateway where staff would have knowledge of the cabin lay-out.

Not to sound rude, but Qantas flies to so few international destinations... how can they possibly have poor F/J lounges!? Especially in LAX of all places!?

I think that relatively recently Qantas spent considerable money on the AA lounge complex at T4 LAX (according to one of the moderators) as most of the flights left for AUS from there. Now they use the TBIT (which is being expanded) and I guess that it is understandable that the existing lounges are not being improved at the moment as the Qantas LAX lounges may be moved to this expanded area, so I can guess that the existing Qantas TBIT lounges are in a holding pattern (sort of not even bothering to improve the internet).

Agree, would expect that the LAX lounge should at least be the equal of SIN and may indeed be so in the future. Has anyone got any information about the expansion of TBIT and in what way this will shape the Qantas lounge in LAX?

Believe me, they can and they do at LAX :(.

Back on topic, a check of the detailed seat map before selecting seats is always a sensible thing to do as there are sometimes subtle differences between aircraft of the same type.

When I was just a bronze, used to get the ticketing people at PQQ to turn the screen around so that I could see where I was sitting on the international flight from SYD, therefore I could milk the bronze status for all that it was worth a few hours before normal check in time at SYD, they are not so keen to turn the screen at the bigger airports. Was expecting the A380 for the recent QF12, so was caught out with the plane change, but don't the ticketing staff see the seat layout also, both the ticketing people at check in and also at the lounge must have misread the screen.

No - the ticketing staff would see the first row - as I said - at outstations they may not appreciate that the first row of available seating is in fact behind the crew rest. There is probably nothing to distinguish the first row (behind crew rest) from the first row (behind a bulkhead) on the 'available seats' chart at check-in. Except perhaps for the availability of bassinets (which require the solid bulkhead).

That's why you need to look at the detailed chart, it would show the first row, but also the 'blocked' seating in front marked as 'crew rest'.

Yep, new oneWorld lounge being built. Supposedly it's going to be very special .. time will tell.

If you are flying AA into LAX stay in T4 and go to the Flagship Lounge if you are WP.

This is a much better option......just make sure you have sufficient time to transfer to TBIT as buses only go every 30 mins.

I usually grab a quick drink at TBIT after 2-3 hours in T4 Flounge......this trip I have 5 hours to spare......

JohnM, where do we find the details of the exact plane that QANTAS is flying? I have wondered about this before and i am sure there is somewhere to check the plane registration (not sure what it is called? VH-OGH i think one of them is??) But you can see it on the qantas seat maps for the planes it correlates to. Hopefully that makes sense?

thanks gogo

There are others on AFF who are far more expert than me to answer how to see the specific aircraft flying (or supposed to be flying) a sector on a given day.

I always check the detailed seat plans for the family of a/c to be aware of things like the crew rests and make a prudent choice that should maximise desirable seating.

Agree, I did think about doing this, check in TBIT and then walk to AA F Lounge in T4, but can't you simply walk between the terminals in about 5 minutes?

It's about 200-300 Metres. A very easy walk.

Clearing TSA security again though can be a PITA...

So can the bus which can go an a multi-km journey to literally take you round the corner.

Back to the seat. For one of my upcoming flights, I've been allocated 41H - right behind the aforementioned crew rest area. Any comments on this seat, apart from it being close to the loos.

Flight is rather empty at the moment (at least from the seat map), so I can still move around...
