Morning,
I'm thinking there was an equipment change this morning. Was stepping on board and heading to Row 4 this morning on QF408 Mel-Syd and realised that this aircraft has really odd J Class seats. I wouldn't have thought too many 734's were flying this route. Glad I'm not flying J this morning......!!!!!

Not unusual when parliament is out, and soon to be replaced by 717s which might even pop up SYD MEL.

I was on the 737-400 in Y for my MEL-SYD trip a couple of weeks ago :)

Flew a 734 Melb-Syd (in J) after changing to an earlier flight July 23rd. Haven't been on one for a while. Even managed to leave my iPad onboard thanks to the additional middle pocket (Qantas kept it for me though).

A 734 in J = :( even if you are used to flying Y (like me). To call it a J product is an insult to QF's other J products IMHO...

I hate it when one QF J product goes around insulting other J products. All those nasty things the Skybed MkI says about MkII, well, I'm not going to repeat them here.

On the 734, I've had a last minute equipment change a couple of times BNE to MEL and seen my 73H 14C/D go from being a lovely exit row seat to way too far back in the plane for my liking.:(

The 737-400's have served the airline well.. but thank god they are going.. came off the 12 on Saturday morning after 17J/K to 1A/C to CBR.. My 15 year old daughter remarked that this looks a little tired.. But the new limo pick up was a treat. Nice BMW 7 series.. I also pre ordered my meal for LAX-SYD.. Out of a full J class.. I was the only one.. and then I had to tell them when they came round asking for orders.. Early days i suppose.. I should add we used one of the new gates at LAX.. Gate 134.. compared to the old TBIT, it's huge.. the 94 was at gate 130.. three aerobridges for A380's.. escalator for the upper deck before the walk onto plane. but it looks good

ex CBR it's 734's a good 80% of the time to MEL and when I do get a 738 it's never with the new-ish IFE.

Used to get 734's BNE-SYD regularly on the late Friday night flights.

Have not seen one for a while now but then I have not had that many late Friday night flights from BNE either.

The 737-400 can be a really nasty surprise. Happened to me a few times on the MEL-BNE route. After carefully choosing seats on row 4 or 13/14 (if 4 is not available) on the 737-800 and expecting the the extra legroom, I arrive to the plane and as soon as I see the 2 flashlights at the entrance I know I'm screwed...

???? Doesn't the 734 have exactly the same seat pitch and width in J as the 738? The only difference is no curtain/divider and potentially 2 more J-class rows? And if in Y on the 734, if you get rows 4 or 5 you get J-class legroom?

Have been dozens of times on both (J and Y) and can't see that much difference... except there is an issue if you selected the (Y-class) exits rows and the aircraft was subbed.

From memory the 738's have 2-3 more inches of pitch in J

Seats on J are less comfortable and row 4 in Y don't have as much legroom.

er, no. The 734 is as fake J seat. Essentially 3 Y seats pretending to be 2 J seats. It is awful

Nope, J on the 734 is the convertible seat. Basically it's an pseudo Y/J hybrid seat which allows the middle arm rests to be pushed together to make a wider seat. It is not a J seat, considering that the tray table is only slightly wider than a normal Y and then there is the "middle" tray table which is so small it's virtually useless especially if the seat is been used as a Y seat.

Whilst I understand the difference that everyone is talking about I really have to ask who cares :?:

It is not as if you are stuck on this 'thing' for hours on end and they will all be gone soon.

Indeed, not like the utterly dreadful domestic 332's where you could be stuck in the Y+ seat for hours. :(

There will always be something to talk about as once the 734s are all gone people will find the next worst offered product and talk (read whinge) about that.
