Hey everyone, been lurking for far too long so thought I'd finally take the opportunity to say hello! :D

Been intrigued at the idea of buying AA miles for J rewards to/from Europe, and have read here that AA run promotions from time to time. Went to see what was on offer post Easter and if my calculations are rights then it seems like there's a beauty on offer!

  • Purchase 20,000 - 29,000 miles: 5,000 Bonus
  • Purchase 30,000 - 39,000 miles: 8,250 Bonus
  • Purchase 40,000 + miles: 12,000 Bonus

The kicker to this is that if you buy before noon April 5th, then you ALSO get a 15% discount on the cost of the base miles.

(Can't post link unfortunately, not enough posts :()

Reading back, and correct me if I'm wrong, the best promotion for bonus miles I've seen is a 50% bonus on the purchase.

Under a 50% bonus miles offer, 90,000 (60k + 30k bonus) miles could be purchased for $1,650 = 1.833c/mile

However, under this bonus offer with the 15% discount, 52,000 miles (40k + 12k bonus) can be purchased for $935 = 1.798c/mile!

And although with less of a bonus, another 25,000 miles (20k + 5k) can be purchased for $467.5 = 1.870c/mile

Acting fast - April 5 is not far away, I know! - it looks like you can purchase 40,000 miles (+12k) and 20,000 miles (+5k), netting 77,000 after bonuses, for $1402.5. This is still only 1.821c/mile, less than the 50% bonus promo.

Yes I know there are slight differences in the promotions in that you only end up with 77k miles this way (so not too good for NRT J return) and you cop the extra $35 processing fee, but wondering whether people thought it was worth giving a crack?

Also, the last 20k miles work out a little more expensive than a 50% bonus offer - from experience, can you buy as little as 20k miles and still receive the full 50% bonus, or is that only for buying higher amounts of miles? Not sure whether it would be worth waiting for a 50% offer but risk not being able to make the most, or if its better to just jump this offer which still works out better than simply buying 90k miles during a 50% bonus offer?

Cheers!

I take it this means noon on 5 April, in the USA (if we assume this is Dallas, then that translates to 3 am on 6 April for those living in Brisbane (AEST)).

Interesting promo, and I see the trick is to only buy the 40k, as buying anything over that doesn't attract extra bonus points (only discounted from the raw rate).

Also, for the unseasoned, just remember that the OP's prices are slightly higher than printed, because after you select how many points you want to pay, the sales taxes get added on the next screen (only a small percentage on top).

Can someone point me in the direction of how these mile things work? From by brutish calculations, it's about 8,000 miles SYD-LAX. But that works out at <$300. So clearly I'm doing it wrong!!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Do these miles/points expire?.

Are they transferrable?

aa.com has your answers, but the long and short of it:
  • Points do expire if you don't have any activity for 18 months
  • Points are transferrable - this is called "sharing" miles, and carries a nominal cost depending on how many miles you share (transfer), plus it is annually capped

Best way is to buy 40k + gets 12k bonus, and buy 20k + gets 5k bonus.
Results: buy 60k reaching max limit and get 17k in bonus = 77k in points.

The prev offer of 50% bonus was better, buy 60k + 30k bonus.
More points is better for me = more locations.

I see they are starting to play games with the different offers.

Have made excellent use of AA miles due to the purchasing and redeeming advice received on AFF

The "miles" are just FF points. The cost for SYD-LAX is 37.5K in Y 62.5K in J 72.5K in F

.... and SWP to USA (including PER-JFK/BOS/ORD/MIA) and anywhere in between (depending on availability), one way. ;)

Edit: I bit the bullet and bought my final 20,000 miles for 2013, tonight, having bought only 40,000 earlier this year.

Not a bad deal, but I've already met my annual 60k limit earlier this year on the 50% promo for both of my
AA accounts.

Im sure your sister, brother or family member has not exhausted the quota ;)

I have enough USDMs for the moment but hopefully there will be another 60+30 later in the year which i might take advantage of perhaps...

But its not that hard to find ways to get a few points here and there and keep the account alive, transferring 1 point via points.com at 17 months will reset the clock as far as I am aware.

With only a few short hours to go, I have been unable to get AA to process my request. Has anyone else had trouble with a CC purchase?

I have contacted my bank, and there is no problem their end.

I was trying to work out whether this offer was exceptional but looking at the above calculations it is almost on par with the 60,000 + 30,000 bonus offer that is likely to be offered in November/December.

Hi,

I certainly believe in purchasing miles but don't forget the sales tax (7.5%) and $30 transaction fee - it all adds up.

If you have bought your yearly allowance then SPG is having a sale at the moment on star points and you can do family transfers with them also. 20K star points converts to 25K miles.

Dale.
