We have 2 full days in Frankfurt in June (arrive Mon night- leave Thursday morning). Was thinking of doing a Rhine cruise & Mosel cruise - not sure. Some advice was not to stay in Frankfurt, instead doing that as a half day trip but having never been before, looking for any advice/suggestions.

Have flown into FRA twice but never stayed there. Both times we picked up the hire car at the airport and driven up to Mainz. The stretch between Bacharach and Boppard is probably my favourite stretch of the Rhine. Can easily spend a couple of days strolling through the streets and definitely recommend a Rhine cruise. We started one in Boppard and stopped at several places along the river the highlight being St Goar and taking the miniature railway to the castle and back down.

Rhine cruise would be a great idea. Consider getting a train to Mainz, which is quite close, having a look at it (including the Gutenberg Museum :)) and cruising from there.

Personally I hired a car at Mainz for a day and drove as far as Koblenz and visited a few castles along the way. I know some-one else who cycled it (probably took more than a day).

We have stayed at St Goar & Cochem. Both easy to get to by train from Frankfurt and enjoyable towns to get around and do as little as you want or catch trains/ferries to see the river towns & castles

Stay in Mainz. The Mainz Hilton is right on the river at the cruise boat docking area. Plenty of nice places to eat nearby. Boat to Rudesheim will fill a day in nicely.

A couple of photos to sell the area to you. Taken from our humble apartments in Cochem & St Goar-I loved watching all the action on the river.

Frankfurt city centre itself is quite nice, but you can see everything worth seeing in 2-3 hours. I'd probably allow for 1 day in Frankfurt and another for a day trip to somewhere like Heidelberg.

We have been to Frankfurt a couple of times. As you are probably aware the centre of Frankfurt was pretty much destroyed in WW2 but there are still some interesting things to see. These include the Imperial Cathedral (Kaiserdom) where coronations of Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire were done in the 16th & 18th centuries, the banks of the Main River are also very nice & a quick walk through the Kleinmarkthalle is also fun. A half day would be plenty.

As others have said there are a number of nice cities very close by and staying in Mainz might be a good idea - and it would be a good base for a river cruise. All of the cities close by are also easily accessible by rail. I have attached a link to a cruise line operating out of Mainz which gives good overview of what you could do. So it's the process walk into to ALDI, buy Sim and place in phone..... Job done?
How much talk and data over there for what price?
12.99€ 600min 3Gb or do you have to buy starter kit first?
So it roams free to France but not Switzerland as driving "romantic road" route?

Pretty much. Not sure if you need to show ID in Germany nowadays when buying the SIM card, but that shouldn't be an issue for most people.

You should now get free roaming in all EU countries with a German SIM card but you might want to check that. There was a rule change last year.

I just had a look on the ALDI talk website. You can get a Aldi Talk starter set pack with included SIM card for €12.99. It looks like it then costs €10 for the first 4 weeks and €19.99 per 4 weeks after that for calls/internet etc with an all-net-flat prepaid plan. This is a more expensive one but you get unlimited calls, SMS, 5GB data and free EU roaming. There are cheaper plans with fewer inclusions. Order online for free delivery to somewhere in Germany within 2-4 business days or just visit an Aldi store there. You can activate the sim card on the Aldi Talk website.

As landing in Ireland(Dublin) first can do all that there? Or is 3 Sim a cheaper\better option that can get from vending machine in airport?

What Sim card for phone in Germany?
no sure about Ireland but for mainland europe I've been using the vodafone NL sim card.
can buy it on ebay and get it shipped here so ready to hit the ground running

more info in the phone & internet section on here.

SIM lasts ~14 months from memory so I use it again & again

EDIT: I'll be in Frankfurt for a week in June so found this thread.

If going towards Heidelberg , this museum with a concorde & a Russian equivalent is awesome, Technik Museum Sinsheim | Germany

And if you go to that one, don't miss it's sister museum at Speyer just down the road, 20kms maybe. But you will need more than 2 days to see all!

As others have said all those places are worth a visit but considering you only have two days to take it all in your not going to get to all of them.
Having lived there for many years, I would suggest you definitely visit Frankfurt CBD, Romer platz in particular is stunning and good shopping close by on the Zeil. Rudesheim would also be a good bet, bit of a wine region and cable car rides with good scenery, Wiesbaden, Bingin, Mainz all on the same route.

Sorry for being so late to say thank you for all the helpful info. to my question. I've still not booked anything yet! Need to get a wriggle on.

In the evening take a trip into Sachsenhausen and have a few beers and food in the Irish or Aussie bars. Take a train to Sud bahnhof and a short 200m walk to the bar district.
