Apologies if this has been covered off on in the past - but I'm having trouble finding any information regarding this.

Will Virgin Australia allow 1 heavier bag (circa 27-28kg) in place of my allowance of 2x 23kg? Or will I need to stump up some cash for extra baggage?

No they are absolute naz_s with this. A very annoying drawback to VA Plat compared to QF Plat.

I reckon no airline would be willing to allow you 1x32kg bag instead of 2x23kg. Additionally, VA has become a lot more strict in the past couple of years than what they were previously. I would suggest dividing up the luggage into two separate bags, if at all possible.

While I agree with you on the point you are making, I have not seen QF doing this either. In fact, as a QF WP, I have had difficulty checking in even one kilo above my allowance (in CBR, on more than one occasion).

For domestic economy, any bag over 23Kg gets hit for an overweight fee, regardless of status.

Thanks for the quick response everyone - looks like I'll have to split across 2 bags then

Not asking for exceptions, the point I am making is that QF give Gold/Plat in domestic economy 2 x 32kg, whereas VA just give 2/3 x 23kg.

Quite often you'll just have one bag that is a little bit over 23, on QF that's fine, on VA it isn't.

VA doesnt line you up at a big hole and shoot you or march you off to the gas chamber so I think naz_s is a bit much. Personally I wouldnt want to be lifting/moving 23+kg bags all day so for staff safety, Im OK with the rules.

For domestic, only J gets 32kgs, all others are 23kg.

This is obviously a personal preference, but IMHO, I prefer 3x23kg bags over 2x32kg bags. VA give WP more weight and volume. What a drawback that is...

It is rare that I travel with a lot of baggage, but when I do, I am normally volume limited rather than weight limited.

They always complain and huff and puff taking 24kg bags. I wouldn't risk it. For this reason, I always carry a checkable fabric duffel inside my big bag, so I can check 2 bags in case I find myself just over the limit.

I understand they don't want every bag weighing 32kg, but if 32kg is OK for business class, presumably they could make it OK for a handful of status passengers.

Occasionally the economy dunnies may be reasonably described as a gas chamber, and maybe they're not actually members of the German National Socialist Workers Party (?), but they do rob you of wealth under irrational and arbitrary circumstances, encourage class distinction, and strut around in uniforms. So I'm going to allow it.....

We were caught out with this SYD-HBA last month. Fortunately mrs andye is a great rearranger (and forgiving as I had told her we would have no problems with bags as we are both SG)
