I read some coments in this forum a few days ago about luggage going missing at LHR so an article this morning in the Herald Sun might be the stuff of nightmares for some:

Apparently 15,000 pax were left in the lurch in one day when 10% of the flights were cancelled

Heathrow asks airlines to cancel 10% of flights today as airport faces baggage backlog

This looks as bad as when terminal 5 first opened and they were flying empty planes to other European airports, just to run the luggage though working sorting machines...

The sheer amount of unclaimed baggage in the baggage collection area at LHR was a real shock when arrived late last month. It was a similar situation at FRA. Bags everywhere. At least FRA had them all lined up neatly though. At LHR they were just piled up in any spare space like garbage.

It made me wonder if there’s even an attempt to reunite bags with their owners. Some friends are competing in a sporting event in Portugal at the moment. Their suitcases containing their sporting equipment and Australian uniforms were lost en route just over a week ago. Iberia had no answers, but a team mate arriving 5 days later poked around the luggage piles at the airport on arrival and hey presto, there were the lost suitcases.

Talked to an American guy last night that was flying Atlanta to Montreal to Heathrow.

He missed his connection out of Montreal, had to spend 24 at the airport at a cost of $480 for a room, he will only get $200 back at some time in the future from Air Canada.

Arrived at Heathrow, bags didn’t come off, off to a queue to ask. Yes sir, your bags arrived 24 hours ago! You just have to find them yourself, took him a while, said it was like the above photo, eventually he found them.

Just as an aside whilst walking from the gate to immigration at Frankfurt, there were probably hundreds of camping beds spread through the walkway, all had that distinctive Frankfurt airport logo on them

So are those piles of bags all ones where the final destination is tagged as LHR?

If for example you bag is tagged as SYD-LHR-EDI; and you bags misses your LHR-EDI flight will someone forward it to EDI or is one expected to travel back to LHR and dig through a pile.

Getting quite worried about flight in the next few weeks with tight connections at LHR. I was advised that QF will check bags through to EDI (no need to collect at LHR).

Yes they should, under normal circumstances but given the chaos at LHR and competence of BA, you maybe waiting a while for it.

They will. Officially you'll clear customs in EDI by either walking out with everyone else (nothing to declare) or declaring. Back in the day intra-EU flights & UK domestic had green lined baggage tags, and others had the normal white, so the officials knew who to look out for.

No idea how it works now since Brexit.

Is LHR-EDI a domestic flight?

Yes (well for now, not if Sturgeon gets her way)

Is LHR-EDI a domestic flight?

Yes it is, but everything Ive read implies you clear immigration and customs in EDI not LHR.

QF1 to LHR connecting to BA1438 all on one ticket, according to the LHR website provided on the one journey and tagged to EDI then "don’t involve transferring baggage, check-in or passport control."

Customs at EDI. Except it’s notional customs. As your arrival is domestic.

I flew BER-LON-EDI on BA a couple of weeks ago. It was booked via LHR but due to BA cancelling our BER-LHR flight we ended up going via LCY. Either way, bags checked thru and did appear at the other end!

Still amazed that people are travelling especially overseas and then complaining that their medication is in their checked baggage. I know you shouldn’t have to worry about it but you’d have to be blind to not notice what’s happening at the moment. Even before this I always made provisions.

Agree - never put meds in a checked bag…

Those photos are a wee bit surprising, but not terribly shocking ... my better-half was working at the London Olympics and I went to stay with her for a few weeks while she was working, my Cathay flight was ahem "somewhat disrupted" as HK airport was shut down for a few days due to a typhoon, and there was a lot of chaos with PAX all being hurriedly re-booked onto different One
World airlines. A lot of people didn't make it to LHR as quickly as their luggage ... when I went to pick mine up, there was SFA room left to actually get to the carousels due to the huge pile of luggage sitting in the middle of the floor near the carousels, I guess a lot of flights going to LHR had originally gone via Hong Kong ...

and phone chargers!

Just saw on Friends FB that she was on QF2 Yesterday, arrived at LHR 4 hours before departure, took 2.5 hours to clear security. She is betting her luggage wont be onboard when she lands in SYD.

BA have now worked out how to solve the problems. I believe the same process takes place in the baggage hold of the plane.

Anyone been through security at LHR T5 in the last couple of mornings? Leaving at 0855 on BA, and wondering how early I will need to be there. Vaguely planning on 0600

Most of the warnings at LHR atm seem to be for flight departing in the evenings, Im really hoping the mornings are less hectic for departures. I have an 8:30am flight on BA and even though Im staying in a hotel at the terminal, I plan to be there when checkin opens at 5am (for J).

If flying Y without status, you can only check in 3 hours before I believe.

However Overnight Bag Drop is available if you are travelling on a flight departing before 13:00, you can check in your bags between 18:00 – 21:00 the day before.
