American Express Platinum cover when only paying taxes on award flight?

I can see in the terms and conditions that travel insurance is only activated when paying for a RETURN flight. We have used airmiles for 2x J flights to UK so have only paid for the taxes on the flight.
Also, we booked the flights in two separate bookings as there wasn't the ability with SQ to book online for multi city bookings. So theoretically we have two singles if that makes sense.
MEL- MAN, LHR- MEL on two separate booking references.
I know I can contact Amex but wondered if the brains trust here may have an answer?

If you paid the taxes on the award flight using your Platinum card then you're covered. I specifically enquired about this several years ago.

I believe two separate one ways are good enough as well.

I’ve claimed on a trip where two one-way tickets were booked. So that should be fine as well

I was actually gonna ask the exact same question, but about the Amex Explorer card. I read the PDS and it said the same thing, something like "or airline reward points", but it's super unclear what it means.

Does it mean any airline loyalty program in the world? Or only the ones AMEX can transfer points to?

And so they really will give you equivilent insurance if you get a classic reward from qantas or velocity reward seat, than if you pay full price?

A supplementary question here - any thoughts on whether a supp card holder traveling by themselves would be covered if the points did not come out of their own (QFF) account?

This travel insurance would be handy for my mum but most likely she would transfer her points to me and I would request seats to be released.

100% fine - had a successful claim 2 weeks ago on my Platinum. Departure and Return tickets were reward flights booked separately and just paid the taxes on my card.

Also doesn't matter if the points for the reward flights come from the Amex transfer or another source.

This is good to know as Chubb told me the whole balance of the FF points used to book must have been transferred from Amex into said program with proof of the transfer if claiming on insurance?

I have booked Singapore air but only transferred half the required points from Amex as I already held a KrisFlyer balance

For me, Amex Plat insurance is worthless for award travel. The PDS is unclear and Chubb is even worse. At the end of the day, I don’t know what @dtaylo25 claimed and was successful with, but paying out other claims does not set a precedent.

Amex may payout travel delay or baggages issues, but if you get injured in say the USA and Chubb is potentially looking at hundreds of thousands in hospital bills… I suspect they’ll be looking for a way out - and that PDS is pretty unclear.

Yes I suspect I am going to end up buying another policy because I don’t want to get caught out and Chubb refuse to go into any more detail

I’ve had 2 travel delay claims this year, one fully award booking and one a paid / award mix and both paid out no problems. Agree that paying out claims before doesn’t guarantee they will continue to ongoing but absolutely no problems with mine so far.

Do you mind me asking , how was the process and how much is the per PAX limit for travel/luggage delays. I have paid for revenue ticket fully from my Amex Charge Card and have met other conditions for the insurance. Thanks

The process was fine - just an online form to fill out and attach relevant documentation (just attached tax invoices and amex statements showing taxes charged for award flights). Funds received in about 2 weeks from submission?
Check the PDS for the insurance which is viewable in your amex account and in the links on the cards webpage. Always keep abreast of the limits as they may change at any point! Link to submit a claim is also in the PDS.
