100,000 Velocity points!

Not quite as good as the previous 110k offer last year, but better than the 80k which it has recently been and likely the best it will be for a while.
There's so much that you can do with 100,000 velocity points, and it comes with the added bonus of a free flight every year should you decide to keep the card. For a Perth person it comes with the added bonus of a PER-SYD flight which is the longest flight available and emily covers the annual fee. I have just recently booked my PER to SYD flight without issue despite Sydney not being one of the official destinations. Others have had the same experience.
East coast people have a better variety of destinations, just not quite as far as us Perthians can redeem (as they don't offer the longer Perth flight for eastern residents - still, there's not much to do in Perth :) )

The main features of this card are:

  • Receive 100,000 bonus Velocity Points when you apply by 15 August 2016, are approved and spend $2,000 on your new Card within the first 3 months[SUP]1[/SUP]. This introductory offer is available to new American Express Card Members only.
  • Earn up to 3 Velocity Points per $1 spent on eligible purchases[SUP]2[/SUP]. See Reward Yourself section for more details.
  • Complimentary Virgin Australia return domestic flight after your first Card spend each year[SUP]3[/SUP].
  • Enjoy 2 complimentary Virgin Australia lounge invitations each anniversary year at selected airports[SUP]4[/SUP].
  • 0% p.a. on balance transfers for the first 12 months[SUP]5[/SUP] - A one-off credit plan establishment fee of 1% applies to any balances transferred. Learn more.
  • Complimentary domestic and international travel insurance[SUP]6[/SUP].
  • Discounted International Business Class Companion Fares[SUP]7[/SUP].

Get the rewards you deserve faster with the American Express Velocity Platinum Card, plus we'll transfer your Velocity Points directly to your Velocity Account each month. You can redeem them for a range of flights, accommodation, car hire, gift cards and much more.

  • 3 Points per $1 spent at restaurants in Australia and Virgin Australia[SUP]2[/SUP].
  • 2 Points per $1 spent on airlines, accommodation, major cruise and tour operators and spend in foreign currency[SUP]2[/SUP].
  • 1 Point per $1 spent on everything else, except those in the 0.5 points category[SUP]2[/SUP].
  • 0.5 Points per $1 spent on utilities, telecommunications companies, non American Express provided insurance and government bodies[SUP]2[/SUP].

Between this and the platinum edge 3 points per dollar can be had on a lot of things.
As a side note, local champion has recently been re-introduced for the Velocity Platinum Card. This means you can earn an extra 1 point per dollar if you become the local champion somewhere. See HERE for more details.

The other great thing about all AMEX cards is statement credits. This basically means that Amex offer you money back if you participate in an offer they make. They can be very lucrative, especially if you have supplementary cards (different cards, same account).
Recent examples are:

Spend $40, get $10 back up to 3 times @ BP
Spend $120 or more & Get $50 Back @ Cellarmasters
Spend $20 or More & Get $10 Back @ Event Cinemas
Spend $125 or more & Get $25 Back @ BCF
Spend $300 or more & Get $50 Back @ Good Guys
Spend $150 or more & Get $30 Back @ Budget
Spend $50 or more & Get $25 Back @ Harris Farm
Spend $10 or more & Get $5 Back @ Kiki K
Spend $750 or More & Get $100 Back @ HP Online
Spend $500 or More & Get $100 Back @ Mantra Online
Spend $350 or More & Get $50 Back @ Qantas Online
Spend $300 or More & Get $60 Back @ Luxury Escapes
Spend $250 or More & Get $50 Back @ Hilton Hotels & Double Tree By Hilton
Spend $75 or More & Get $15 Back @ Aveda Online

There's a great thread discussing statement credits HERE.

As well as frequent statement credits, there's the amazing SHOP SMALL which is held once or twice a year. It basically allows you to claim multiple statement credits from participating small businesses. Generally it is spend $20, get $10 back - 10 times for every card you have. I have multiple supplementary cards on my Platinum Velocity which I register, so the value I claim back is usually in the hundreds of dollars.

Onto what you can do with your 100,000 points.
The natural option is to use the points on Virgin Australia. Be it domestic or International travel. Generally taxes are higher on international flights.

As an example, you could fly business from Sydney to Melbourne for 15,500 points plus $21.10 in taxes. Economy is nearly half the points, but same taxes. So it's obvious the 100,000 points will take you a long way. :)

Another great way to use velocity points is to transfer them to Krisflyer for use on Singapore airlines. The transfer rate is 1:1.35 (Krisflyer:Velocity)

The below resource (PDF) is great for award redemptions on Singapore Airlines.
It basically summarises the points needed for differing classes of travel to/from Singapore. The 'points required' look like they include the online booking discount.
Remember, 100,000 velocity points equates to 74,074 kris flyer points.

Of course I would be extremely grateful if anyone was to use my referral link should you decide to sign up to this card. :)
I'm sorry this post has bulged to the size that it is. I just believe that if people are going to honour me by using my referral link, the least I can do is try and provide useful information in their decision making process.
Thanks :)

Looks like Velocity is really dishing out points out there. We had the NAB 70,000 CC sign up, 250,000 for mortgages and now this.

Hi Coops - yes I just noticed that as well this evening under my wife's card account. My account is saying 30k referral points, so it must be targeted.

Not sure what the latest rules are re: posting of referral links, last time it was all in the one thread but please let me know / remove if this is the wrong place to post! Thanks

Now there seems to be a big kicker with this one...my referral bonus for EACH person is worth 60,000pts as a referrer...anybody else got the same? For those that want to use a link here is mine - http://amex.com.au/refer/ashlecJ87D

Wow! I hadn't even noticed that. Incredible!

American Express discourages spamming. You should only send referral messages to friends and family who genuinely want to receive them. By participating in ‘Refer a Friend’, you agree to these ‘Refer a Friend’ terms and conditions:
  • Only Friends & Family: You must only send referral messages to close friends and family. Do not market or promote this offer through paid advertising channels or to the public at large (i.e. on public blog sites, search engines or in sponsored ads). .
  • Ask Their Permission First: You must ask the person for their permission to send them an email about your Card product. Sending emails to people without consent is considered spam.
  • The Offer: If you hold an American Express Velocity Platinum Card, you will earn 60,000 Velocity Points when you refer a friend by 31 July 2016. Your friend must apply by 15 August 2016 using your link and be approved for you to receive your points. Your friends reward will be 100,000 Velocity Points when they apply by 15 August 2016 for the American Express Velocity Platinum Card, are approved, and spend $2,000 in the first 3 months of Card Membership.
  • Cap Referrals: You may only send referral messages to a maximum of 20 friends. The amount of Velocity Points you may receive under the 'Refer a Friend' program for this 60,000 Velocity Points offer is capped at 200,000 points for referrals made between 1 July 2016 to 31 July 2016. This cap is in addition to the 200,000 point cap you receive for the year under the 'Refer a Friend' program.
  • Your friend must apply from the referral link we have given you. If your friend applies from a separate link or applies independently (i.e. if they visit americanexpress.com directly) you will not receive your rewards.
  • You will only receive rewards if your friend’s Card application is approved (in accordance with our usual Card application processes and assessments). Note: We will not tell you if your friend’s Card application is approved or declined for privacy and confidentiality reasons.
  • You cannot refer a friend who already has one of our cards or has held one in the last 12 months.
  • You must be enrolled in Velocity Frequent Flyer to receive bonus points.
  • It may take 8 to 10 weeks to be credited bonus points if you are successful.

Hi All,

This deal is back and I'm throwing my referral link in the ring as well.

This is a great offer for 100K points if you apply via a referral link and spend $2,000 in the first 3 months with a $349 annual fee. The card gives you the following benefits:

  • Earn 3 points per $ at restaurants
  • 2 points per $ at airlines, accommodation, major cruise and tour operators and spend in foreign currency
  • Enjoy a complimentary domestic return flight with Virgin Australia to selected cities, now and every year after your first Card spend
  • Two complimentary single entry passes to the Virgin Australia lounge
  • Two complimentary single entry passes to the AMEX lounge at SYD

The annual fee can easily be offset if you take advantage of the AMEX statement credit offers on your card.

Please help a fellow frequent flyer achieve his dream to fly at the pointy end by using my below referral link - I will receive 60K points if you use my referral link by August 15th.

Thank you wonderful AFFers :)

My Referral Link

Both wifey and I have 60k..... the additional thing to note.... it is a maximum of 200,000 pts for July 2016, instead of for the whole year

Re Referrals- This is the referral thread, so all good I believe!

Is this:

  • You cannot refer a friend who already has one of our cards or has held one in the last 12 months.

coupled with this:

Why should I comply?
If you fail to comply with these ‘Refer a Friend’ Terms and Conditions, your participation in the program may be cancelled and you will no longer be eligible for any Membership Rewards Points from the ‘Refer a Friend’ program.

a bit sterner in tone than in the past?

Yeah, but they're offering a lot of points which suggests that they are VERY keen for signups. After the 110k offer from late 2014 (?), I'm sure they know what they're in for..

Kinda wished I'd cancelled mine sooner so I could re-apply. But of course I only used my Perth to Sydney return flight (including lounge visits) last month to go to Vivid.
The really great thing about the free flights is that they WAY easier to book than award flights. For example I could still book flights (approx $650 value) to New years in Sydney if I hadn't used my yearly complimentary flight for this year.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

If cardholder has the free flight booked to use in 2 months time but cancels the card now , will the free flight be canceled or affected ?

We need a few volunteers to apply who have cancelled this card within the previous 12 months. ;)

My wife cancelled her card in late May. Didn't affect the SYD-CNS-SYD flight we took in mid-June. Lovely long weekend away in Port Douglas. I'm keeping my own card of course - I love it. It's the second time I've had one so I've managed to pick up two sign-on bonus', slightly more than 12 months apart.

If you look towards the end of the 80,000 thread, I believe there is a AFF member that's had success in similar circumstances.

That was me. I can confirm a couple of scenarios, for anyone concerned:

Scenario 1 - current AMEX issued card holders. I am an AMEX Platinum Charge cardholder. I applied an was approved for this card 2 weeks ago (lousy timigng just before the referral increase!) but can confirm I received the referral bonus (80,000 points at that time)
Scenario 2 - cancelled AMEX issued card less than 12 months ago. My husband cancelled his AMEX Premium card just one month ago and signed up yesterday. He was advised by AMEX call centre today that he will be receiving the referral bonus.

So Amex appears to be quite 'lax' when enforcing the rules.

Here is my referral, if anyone would like to use it:

Cheers
