Hi mat1984, welcome to AFF. :D
... I can give you an inside tip about what will happen with oneworld RTW prices if people are interested? i received an industry update a couple of days ago which is an upcoming release for 1 Feb. ...
Yes please, many would find that information quite interesting ...

Re: Impending Star Alliance Rtw Fare Increase

Ok well here is the scoop. Continent based OneWorld round the worlds go on sale from 1 Feb for 10 weeks, in conjunction with OW's 10th anniversary. Have a guess at the percentage off discount?? :)
This means you can get a 4 continent RTW with up to 16 segments for around $3800 with taxes in low season. great value considering the Star fare will now be $4200+ taxes! so around $5k for a 5-10 stop, 29000 mile fare.

FYI They always count Aus/South West Pacific as a continent because you can stopover domestically/NZ/Fiji

NB this sale doesn't include the 26k mile global explorer which is their 3-5 stop itinerary which usually comes in around $3500 with taxes in low season, unless you do it on the Qantas/OW website where Qantas has paid huge amount of dollars in technology to try and get you to pay their fuel surcharges, i can help you avoid these tho.

[OW high season add $300 to explorer fares, $200 to continent fares. for departures 28/5 - 15/8 and 1/12-24/12.]

Thanks for the information; shame this was not on last year when I purchased 2 LHONE4's (from AA to avoid the QF fuel fines)

Hmmm Fiji for xGLOBnn's perhaps but not xONEx's.

Best Frights have just sent an email confirming this 10% sale. However, when I phoned them to query whether the 10% off was for all countries of departure, I was told it was Australia only. I phoned Qantas and the bloke I spoke to had no idea about the sale and suggested it must have been a promotion through Best Frights only!

Re: Impending Star Alliance Rtw Fare Increase

I phoned QF today and they had no idea. If anything the guy suggested that fares were going up! I got the impression that selling one world products was not a strong point of his.

Re: Impending Star Alliance Rtw Fare Increase

I just phoned British Airways on their Australian 1800 number. Their call centre first didn't know anything about it but after being put on hold for four or so minutes I was told yes, the 10% discount does apply to worldwide departures.

Where abouts is it on the Best FLights website?

Yes - saw it thanks.

The big bonus for members of this site is that it is 10% of the DONEs and AONEs also.

Wow ! 10% is a fair amount. Could be good times to book.

Re: Impending Star Alliance Rtw Fare Increase

Just a thought, will the 10% discount be applied to bookings made via the OW booking engine?

Perhaps see it as a credit to be used towards Qantas's surcharges and fees which they add!

good call Mel. I wouldnt be using that engine if it was me as you pay the top price for taxes and fuel, although being the director of a competing company would make me say that :)

qantas dont want u to issue the ticket to CX, AY, LA, AA etc because they get less revenue so to stop people like me doing that they developed their system to try and get bookings before people have a chance to realise that you dont have to pay $1100-1400 in tax/fuel for a RTW...

also...their RTW planner wont tell u how to save money. if you put in a route that is 5 miles over the permitted allowance no where does it say, 'hey if u flew out of munich instead of frankfurt you could save $500' etc...

again im a little biased :)

If you use the one available through oneworld - Home (oneworld planner) and have an AA flight number as your first segment (e.g. AA7398 CBR-SYD or AA7365 SYD-JFK) then it will book via AA and thereby eliminate much of the fuel fines.

yeah but u can still get less than that, at the end of the day its a oneworld planner but fully commissioned by qantas so they are issuing the ticket. if u use a consolidator we have the choice on who to plate the ticket to. as u say though, the less QF and BA flight numbers the better and codeshares are a good way around this.

star alliance have announced they will put out an online booking engine as well, no date as yet, but same thing, singapore airlines issued so you'll pay top tax.

Re: Impending Star Alliance Rtw Fare Increase

Does anyone know if an ex-AUS DONE4 (with a mixture of CX, QF, BA and AA) will have substantially lower fees and taxes etc if ticketed [in AUS] by CX vs QF?

SYD-HKG-NRT-DPS-NRT-JFK-DFW-JFK-LAX-LHR-HKG-AKL-MEL-PER-CBR

Booking this routing with QF and CX on first segment returns the following in
ppplus.bmp
:
  • First flight on
    • QF: AUD1,836,37
    • CX: AUD1,813.45

Adding CBR at the front: CBR-SYD-HKG-NRT-DPS-NRT-JFK-DFW-JFK-LAX-LHR-HKG-AKL-MEL-PER-CBR

And booking an AA codeshare CBR-SYD returns the following in
ppplus.bmp
:
  • First flight on AA:
    • AA transpacific and transatlantic: AUD740.33
    • JL transpacific and BA transatlantic: AUD492.63

Re: Impending Star Alliance Rtw Fare Increase

Ouch!!

I've had to use a TA and I'm almost certain that she will ticket via QF or AA.

On the upside, there is a saving from 1 Feb and she has managed to grab the last 2 "A" seats on an overnight flight.

For next time, does anyone know if AA will accept a waitlist for "A" class seats and how does the waitlist clear? [ie does it clear at checkin ahead of all the AA members who mill around demanding a free upgrade?]
