I left this a bit late and now flights are expensive. I've got 590 credits (10 short of Gold renewal) and have until this Tuesday to get there. I have the complication of living 375km from Melbourne, so would have to involved the family in travel. I'm wondering if it's worth chasing Gold for what is a really expensive time to travel...... or take a chance on getting recomped for next year? Last year I only had 100 credits for the year and I got comped for this year! Wasn't expecting that. Luckily I had a MELB/MILAN J trip to boost the numbers this year.

My question is, have other members been in this situation and Qantas recomped even though you were a few credits short?

First question is, what level of SCs were achieved in the past two years prior to this years shortfall?

Only 100 credits last year (which was renewed despite not making goal) then Gold for two years before that (over 600 credits each year)

You probably used up all your comps in that case, I would say its really line ball.

Yes I think so too. It's like trying to herd cats getting the family organised for something like this. Thanks for your advice.

Flights on JQ on Dec 31 can be quite reasonable, so long as you are willing to forgo your NYE celebrations. Eg MEL-ADL or MEL-LST return on Dec 31 for about $200 return (with bundle) will net you 20 SCs.

Definitely never heard of anyone getting comped two years in a row.

Fair enough. But from those posts had done 600+, 350, 550.

There are some reports that the 3-yr avg counts

I've decided to take my chances for a comp. I'll post what happens.

Well what does your status say on line? If it shows it expiring 31 Dec 13 then you're not getting comped. If it shows 31 Dec 14 then you've already been comped.

If you were to be comped, it would have normally have happened by mid November. They tend to do these six to eight weeks beforehand.

It is late - what direction from MEL do you live?

depend on what part of victoria you are in - there is an albury to sydney on 31 for $195 - it is also available as a classic so you could do a ASA on it if need be. Bus or train it back from Sydney on the cheap or even a one way rental car.

Mildura to Melbourne is similar - return all up for $290

As you have QP life I don't know if gold really gives you much more benefits (except of course on international lounges)

2013 unfortunately.

I'm in Western Victoria so it's always a big deal getting to Melbourne or Adelaide for flights. My wife and I have Plat VA so all is not lost if QA doesn't comp me. It's a good lesson not to leave your race until the end though. I might try the email to AJ as mentioned in another thread. ;)

I was also 10 SC short to requalify for SG but I was comped (even though I have a flight on the second last day of my membership that would have got me over the line).

Not in experience, I was only comped about 1 week before the end of my membership year.

Expericnces can vary, but over the years, the 6-8 weeks has been the most common reported occurrence of such.

Common sense would suggest that there are a number of reviews done prior to relegation, including one on expiry as was the case for me a few years back where SG was comp'd after a year that saw a massive 100 SC or so earned, this year a comp was evident at 8 weeks thanks to a good bank of excess credits in the previous year.

Drive to Mildura and do a return Qantaslink? Or train to Mel then train home from ADL?

Mel-ADL @ $109 for 31.12.

I guess you also need to consider how much flying you're likely to do in 2014 and whether Gold is "worth it".

I'm another exception. I've been comped 3 WP years running but in no case did I need it. If the 6 week rule applied, I'd be hundreds short in all years, but I was comped before my last (long) leg in J each year, so over 100 short.

I'm sure last year I got the comp when I recieved my new card a month after anniversary. I definitely didn't get it before the changeover date. It's with the gods now....
