Hi there,
My wife and I are booked on an economy ticket to London on QF1 end of August (Friday arvo). I'd like to apply for an upgrade to business for the both of us. I'm a WP FF but if I get my wife to transfer all her FF points to my account, we are still going to be 10,000 short by the time of our flight. Firstly, how realistic is it to even get the upgrade on Friday afternoon flight? Are these flights generally fully booked in business?

Secondly, what's the best, most cost effective way to get 10,000 QFF points in the next 4-5 months. I don't have an ABN and have already two credit cards. Topping up 10,000 points online on Qantas' website is $335 but was hoping that there is a cheaper way that actually gives me something in return for spending money to pay for the QFF points.

Many thanks!

Hi.
This is easy. Last week I applied for both the WestPac Black & NAB Platinum cards. Both are fee free for the first year, and they currently have sign-on bonus offers of 60k & 40k points respectively - so 100k points for zero cost.
They both will credit the points within your time frame.

Given that you have enough cards, just cancel them both early next year. Or give the bank the option of waiving the 2nd year fee...

Thanks so much. The WestPac card looks awesome. Couldn't find a NAB card with 20k points bonus and no fees for 1st year. The only QFF reward card offer NAB has right now is for $250 for 10,000 bonus. Anyway, I'll prob. go for the WestPac card.

Cheers

The WBC fee free deal is 'in house', ie not publicised.
If you phone the call centre and ask for it, they just say yes and proceed with signing you up. That was my experience last week...

Yeah, so looks like Westpac only waives the first year's fee for existing Westpac customers for the Altitude Black Rewards Card:

"$0 annual fee in the first yearfor existing Westpac customers who apply via westpac.com.au and click on the Westpac customers 'Apply now’ button. New cards only. "

So you are saying that you got the fees for the first year waived even though you weren't a Westpac customer by going through the call centre?

Will it be honoured though? If the annual fee does appear on your statement is it easy to dispute it by saying the call centre staff told you a different thing when you applied?

Just applied and was approved in about a minute, existing customer, zero fee, sweet.

There's no need to be an existing customer. The last time I had a WBC account was in the 80's...
And, it's not just a matter of taking the call centre staff word for it: that's the actual deal that came in the mail.
I didn't apply over the net because it wasn't available that way. It needs to be done through the call centre, or in branch.

I think there are a couple of different flavors here Jimmy. There's an apply through the web site as an existing customer, no fee and then there's ring or go to a branch, also no fee.

How about applying online for an ABN and then join Qantas Aquire. Currently a promo offering exactly 10,000 points for joining.
$89.95 joining fee + ABN, may be a cheaper option.

Yeah, I seriously doubt it that there is a chance for an Economy -> Business upgrade on the QF1 but it's worth a try I guess. I checked online on qantas.com.au and business class seats on QF1 are sold out on the next two Fridays for example :-(

From the Things you should know fine print:

"In order to be eligible customers must have been charged the standard annual fee. "

This suggests you are not eligible for the 60k if your annual fee is waived?

Well spotted.

It's also easier to get instant approval in branch as the staff can often 'work it' so the system accepts. With online applications I've found it to be a bit hit and miss.
