Background...family of 5 (2 adults, 3 kids) would like to visit the US next September/October with the following itinerary:

Perth
New York City - 5 nights
Chicago - 3 nights
Los Angeles - 2 nights
Anaheim: Disneyland - 4 nights
San Francisco - 3 nights
Hawaii - 4 nights
Sydney - 1 night
Perth

We have around 1.3 million points to play with, ideally we’d love to fly in J to JFK but happy with Y for all other flights.

I can see I can get 4 Classic Awards (if I look at August 2019) with Cathay via Hong Kong. Once booked, would it be as simple as calling Cathay to book the extra child seat in J? Should I call Qantas to see what other options there are?

Many thanks for any suggestions, comments or advice.

No replies, should I ask in Your Questions? Apologies if I’ve asked in the wrong section.

I’m bumping for you! Sorry I don’t know the answer to the child question but maybe it’s been asked before so it might be found using search?

This is a hard one. 4 or 5 seats is difficult.
What is your capacity to spend cash to make up missing seats or internal flights?

If you take the 4 classic awards via hong kong, is that return? Are you proposing to pay cash for a fifth business class seat?
Do you what to get the internal flights on the same booking or are you happy to purchase those separately?

Having done this twice for 4 and 5 people, my approach is to get the international awards (return) and pay cash for the internal flights. I'd probably call Qantas to start to see if you can get 5 classic awards on the flight to/from USA.
Otherwise, take the 4 classic awards, assuming they are return awards, and then pay cash for the 5th seat to/from USA. But it would be better to put yourself (or the most frequent flyer) on the paid business class seat, not the kid, to earn the status credits. Absolutely make sure you have the return awards locked in before buying a paid airfare. One way international airfares are much more expensive.

I don't thing you have enough points for 5 oneworld circle awards, but there is a maximum cap for awards where you might be able to get all your flights on the one award. just not sure how that could work for 5 people. I forgot the name of this award

I've booked 4/5 J award seats multiply times over the past 12 years.... FWIW, I do have status with QFF, so that probably makes a difference.

CX will most likely be your best bet, but I would also look at using BNE as your departure/arrival point. BNE-LAX-BNE has a track record for availability for multi award seats.

A couple of random examples....

5 x J seats late July

4 x J seats late Aug

Securing the award seats (return) and then booking revenue is wise advice. Have the agent link the revenue / award booking.

I ended up having to specify each leg including connections separately. From then I worked it down to be domestic connections with cash and international on rewards. Seemed to work out ok but was 11 months in advance too. The number of hops to get right is hard to find the given availabilty but persevere.

Oh and getting rewards from PER was a nightmare. Best starting on east coast. BNE was the best. But now with the 744s disappearing the available seats are way less and you will also end up on the coughpy Y 787s.

Thanks Vic, I'll do my best to answer your questions.

I can see on the CX website one way child in J is $4.5k, that's probably the most we would want to spend, using points for internal flights. As we are travelling across the US, we really don't want to backtrack and leave the US from NYC as our final destination is Hawaii and I see we can get award bookings in Y to most of our destinations if we book far enough in advance.

So, no, not return from Hong Kong, one way in J to NYC is our goal, Y the rest of the way across the USA and back to Australia. Does it matter if internal flights are not on the same booking? Is this so our baggage allowance is carried the whole journey?

We are both lowly Bronze and status is not important to us, we have QP for domestic flights and don't travel for work, just the odd OS junket for our business.

Wow, you have so may more flights available than lowly Bronze here! Thanks for your reply amaroo, I hadn't considered BNE so I will research some more.

Thanks Mark, seems there is not much from Perth. Would you know when Emirates awards are added please?

Thanks again everyone, I've booked trips before but usually only for my partner and I, not with 3 kids added on, and with multiple stops, definitely a learning curve. I will call Qantas to see what other routes/airlines are available to us.

Not sure on Emirates. Most come early so look 11 months out. They may pop in after 10. See about Qatar as well being oneworld from Perth.

Also make sure you are all on the same booking if possible in case they change flights on you as you are booking so early. Happened to us and we and domestic connections on separate individual bookings so was a nightmare to reorganise

Okay, I've thought of this....there seems to be a lot more classic awards Hong Kong to JFK in J...we could fly in Y to Hong Kong at a stretch but I can't see any direct flights from Perth to Hong Kong, does this even exist? Thanks.

China Southern would be an option for that many seats to the USA.

I'll second brisbane as a good place to look for awards. Also have seen a bit of availability from Melbourne with the second 787 flight. Our most recent effort is separate awards Australia to NYC, and LA to Australia for 4. This did cost extra in the award copayment. Having status with Qantas makes it possible to book that many seats.

I forgot about the unaccompanied minor rule. Another reason to pay for an adult cash fare on international if you have to go down that pathway. But that would be the least preferred option.

I'd suggest you should look to book as a multi-segment booking to give you different arrival and departure points in the USA. If you can get awards for the international flights, then you might be able to get the internal flights for under $4.5k, just. Award availability on international legs will be the hard bit.

Also have to priced the cost of the flights. our Australia to NYC was 128000 points plus about A$600 in business. Don't forget to factor in the award taxes. These will be a bit lower via hong kong, i think.

For less than trivial award bookings I think the phone booking fee of $50 per person is well worth it - and if it can be booked online they will tell you how and save you the $50. If you get the right operator they can find the flights and know the tricks. It is good to do the research first around different airlines though. I ended with a few booking on long haul 'business' on BA only to find they don't have business class per se and it was very average.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

We did SYD-NYC on QF J a couple of year ago and then return on CX in J via HGK for 2 people.

It was very hard to get the flights for 2 people around the school holidays which is what I am assuming you would want. We had to depart 2 weeks before the end of school term and return 2 weeks after term 4 started to get the awards as a lowly bronze.

But I learnt a lot over the last couple of years about various routing so hopefully it will work out for you. Good luck

What about if we reversed our trip and started with Hawaii and ended in New York? Or at least flying to Hong Kong or Dubai then to Perth from the east coast of the US? Can do Y in most sectors but prefer J for the 10+ hour flight home.

Update: we decided to reverse our trip and commence our holiday in Hawaii as flying PER-SYD-HNL was bearable in Y and more classic awards looked to be available. I've been checking each day at 10.00am QLD time as I've read when this is when awards are released, no idea if it's true but it certainly worked today. Flying out on 23 September for 225000 points and $1178 for the 5 of us. So happy! We're still to finalise the rest of our itinerary (I have another thread going regarding where to go in the US) but for now, 6 nights in Hawaii is a great start.

Thanks to you all who replied, I was ecstatic to see award flights available to this lowly Bronze.

Next flight to book is to LAX, I see Alaska Airlines have a 3.00pm departure which would suit us. Has anyone flown with them before? Cheers.
