Sorry to hear about the missed connection and airport chaos. From what you shared, I am guessing it would have required a 3.5 - 4.0 hour connection time to be safe? I based it on, 15 mins to clear immigration in T1, 45 mins wait for bags, 1 hour to recheck and 30 mins for bus (wait + travel)...
