I utilise most of the gadgets etc that have been mentioned but my favourite traveling partner is a self inflating 'Kyak' sushion. It rolls up easily and fits into a back pack or even a ladies large carry on bag. It is great for either the back on short flights and the bottom on longer flights...
Maybe he needs to invest in a good pair of noise cancelling headphones?????
I have traveled many times when children were close by; can't say they have ever prevented me from sleeping, then again, I can sleep standing up if required ;)

I had a recent experience that was not lost luggage, but a left behind Fitbit watch on a flight to Singapore on a QF flight. the watch was handed in to Changi Lost & Found but they in their wisdom sent it to Qantas, I was flying out next day at 8 am...
