Have done this too. Only tried once and the gentlemen on the phone just confirmed it as a part of a mixed class booking. Didn't take much work on my end, if any.

Re: VA points for kWhs Its over 4 plants, and I believe the biggest does have a cheap rate but I am sure the 3 smaller ones aren't on any type of deal. Will get someone in the office to investigate this a bit further.

A380 isn't getting new business class seats (not much difference though, just a few more pockets and bigger screen), as for the 777-ER I am sure that would be new seats. Best way to be 100% sure is to check seat plan, if it's 1-2-1 then you are good to go.

Also reviewing your status isn't instant (at least that's what I've seen when it comes to my Plat renewal each year?), usually takes 4-5 days to process, but by then like you said you will requal. My point being though you should still get all the Plat perks on your way back.
