What's the most obscure airport you've visited?

In Oz - YCKN Cooktown Qld, elsewhere KMCE Merced California. There were a couple of remote tourist 'heliports', but apparently, they don't count.

Article: How It Feels on an Economy Class Redeye Flight

Caption: 'Ok, who farted?" Done a few long overnighters in economy - across the Pacific both ways twice, across the Indian 3 times, across the Atlantic once, but never in the middle seat. It's not all that bad really, particularly if one is paying with one's own real money (not points or...

    Airport bag handling video

Rough handling of luggage has been going on for years. Those of us who wait in the gate lounge can often watch bags being thrown onto the loading conveyor belts. Surely it doesn't take any longer to place the bags carefully, and it certainly takes less physical effort.

Travelling experiences with armed soldiers and guards

I flew Melbourne to Adelaide early on in the pandemic, and I'm pretty sure there were conspicuously armed guards (can't remember if there were army or police) with long guns in the terminal in Melbs.

    Travel Insurance 92yr old

I'm 78 and have flown overseas a few times in the last 5-6 years. I looked at travel insurance quite carefully, but as I have pre-existing conditions that are hideously expensive to get cover for, I don't bother getting cover for that. I just get basic insurance to cover delays, lost luggage etc...

    Rookie to experienced frequent flyer

For me it was probably lighting up in the non-smoking section of the plane.

The top & bottom of New Zealand

The highlight for me in Invercargill early last year was the collection of old motorbikes in the Mitre 10 store in town - including Bert Munroe's 'World's Fastest Indian'. Apart from that, I quite liked the run down charm of the place. We stayed at the Victoria Railway Hotel - a bit of olde...

    What's your favourite aircraft type?

Anything with propellors - jets can't match the initial surge down the runway when the props bite. I'm old enough to have flown in Convairs - one flight (Melb to Canberra) the pilot must have thought he was Biggles when he hedgehopped over the Brindies on the way in. But I like A380s, and I...

Anyone actually made a booking with Virgin recently?

No problem MEL - ADL return mid December. Chrome on my PC, apps on Android all worked well.

Qatar Airways unbundling business class "R" fares

Qsuites on Qatar flights are very nice. The paid lounge in the Qatar airport (Hamid?) is pleasant and costs $US50 thereabouts - nothing compared to the cost of the ticket.

Why do baggage handlers throw baggage?

Ah - respect is what is lacking here.

Why do baggage handlers throw baggage?

Not that I fly often, but occassionally while waiting for a domestic flight (maybe once a year) I get to watch luggage being loaded or unloaded. The baggage handlers seem to put extra effort into throwing the bags onto the trolley or onto the conveyor. Wouldn't take less effort to just place the...

Suggestions for a travel destination for September?

My first thought was Paris and Provence area, but for something more 'interesting' think about Vietnam and Cambodia. Both are quite easy countries to travel in, they can be cheap without being nasty, and of course the food is great. Hanoi is one of my favourite cities, and the Ankor complex near...

Ticket price changed from AU$1,491.47 to AU$29,214.22.

Maybe it was HKD - some years ago now.

Ticket price changed from AU$1,491.47 to AU$29,214.22.

Ive seen that a couple of times when dummy booking a RTW flight ... as soon as I included Singapore in the trip the price went up by a factor or 20 or so. My guess is that the booking engine switched to Singapore Dollars when Singapore 2as included.

    Premium economy to London

A bit off topic - I'm sitting in a TVG to Lyon in France in Classe 1, and I wish PE seats were as comfy as these. The pitch and width are about the same, but the seat is well upholstered as are the armrests. The hard armrests in most PE seats are literally a pain after a few hours.

    Premium economy to London

Hi MEL - i must have lost my train of thought - the $5K included flight across USA, some fiddling in UK and Europe. I think the base was $3800.

    Premium economy to London

This 75 yr old man of average size flies overseas maybe once a year to visit a son in New York, and for the last 2 trips got RTW tickets in PE in Lufthansa from my friendly travel agent. The various legs are on Air NZ, Lufhansa and Qantas. The price and time is not much more than economy ($5k...

First time to the US - comments on itinerary

You'll need a good supply of US currency before you land - particularly $1 and $5 bills. You'll need these for tipping the shuttle driver, the doorman, the bellboy etc. Do not be stingy about tipping. When in Rome etc. Until last December I had mostly transited through LA on the way to or from...

How to redeem Lufthansa points in Australia

Hi MEL - thanks for that. I had a look through the list - looked at hotels in London (going in May) and it looks like my points are worth maybe half a day in a modest establishment! I might be flying to NZ later this year so I'll look at that too.
