I see QF209 SIN-LHR is going via Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan to squeeze its way between Afghanistan and Russia. The Saudi Arabia route is similar in distance to going via Iran I believe, probably has to do with flight conditions.

Yes, the last unrefurbished, VH-OQL, is in AUH being upgraded to new seats.

The Sonesta tends to be competitively priced and the shuttle is very frequent (more than the Hilton shuttle). The Hilton is my preferred option when the price is good, but I'm Hilton Diamond, so I usually enjoy an upgrade.

OQC's transponder has had some activity in January (according to FR24), while OQA has been in complete "radio" silence for years now, so I would bet on OQC!

Only single passenger booking can opt for upgrade at the airport option, so I'd say separate bookings increase the chance of at least one of you being upgraded.

As per Oneworld rules, yes you should have access connecting from long haul F to short/medium haul J.

The First cabin is full (F0, A0), unfortunately. The 2nd A380 on 10/7 shows F9. It's possible some QF execs/marketing will be travelling on 8/7 to do some promotion of the A380 on that route. Anything for a bit of publicity...
