    Unusual airport taxi/transport experiences

My favourite, but sadly gone, was the tuk tuk aka Remorque from the old Siem Reap airport into town. We held the conference there last year and I was picking up international guests and taking them back to the hotel in them, the USA people were blown away. Best part was going via Angkor Wat.

How did you feel about losing your airline/hotel elite status?

This might stray off the original post, but after cleaning the parents property, I came across some "classics" from over fifty years ago. The first one, the boarding pass; no name, just the seat! No. 2, love the V-jet 707, but not sure what the misc charge was. No. 3, 2 baht for porterage...

How did you feel about losing your airline/hotel elite status?

Although this thread is about losing status, just a line to go further; when you lose the ability to travel, full stop! The past week, I have been cleaning out my parent's home, which has been in the family for 92 years. Both are now in aged care and will, unfortunately, never see an airport...

How did you feel about losing your airline/hotel elite status?

I treasure my Marriott LTT more than airline status. And just coming off the trip to Japan/HKG, my daughter understands why that is so. I will make QF Pt again this year, but I'm getting into the zone of whether I ramp it up to go for LTP, but the $$$ figure is a bit scary.

Moving carry on luggage to another overhead bin??

Many years ago my mother, whose travel days are sadly over and now in Aged Care, found that the pax in front of her had put his bag under his seat, i.e. in her footwell. He claimed that that space also belonged to his seat and hoped mum didn't mind. He was not happy to move it, but once Dad said...

Best Way from BKK airport to Sukhumvit

Taxi or Grab, too easy. One "marker" to see if you are being ripped off by the taxi driver, the second mosque you pass is around the 18.6 - 18.9 km mark from the airport. I have on rare occasions, been ripped off by drivers, but for over 75 trips there, I don't think the batting ave is too bad...

Japan Airlines plane in flames at Tokyo's Haneda airport

We will be back to Handea Friday, so will see how the pax are then. Naha seemed to be busy, though, with a lot of aircraft in, even lovely Jetstar!

Japan Airlines plane in flames at Tokyo's Haneda airport

Flying out of Haneda today for Naha, there was little evidence left of the crash. Everything was tidied up, although there seemed to be a few workers around with a few bitumen trucks. What was a bit different was the JAL safety video and the focus on escape via the air slides. On our guess, it...

Japan Airlines plane in flames at Tokyo's Haneda airport

Pity its stablemate The Age was a bit better at reporting the topic. After three "PgDn", we found the story after the all-important 5 stories on cricket, the almost standard clickbait travel "best of 10", Domain.com and other pulpy rubbish. Sitting here 5kms from Haneda, we had to go to the NYT...

Japan Airlines plane in flames at Tokyo's Haneda airport

Photo's from yesterday at Keikyu Kemata Station around 8am. Sorry about the shots, not great, but my daughter noticed it just as the train was coming from the city. It was mostly steam with a bit of other mixed in. (After working in smelters for 45 years, you quickly learn how to distinguish...

Japan Airlines plane in flames at Tokyo's Haneda airport

Update from Ota; sirens were going all night, until about 3am, both police and fire brigade. We are staying just behind the Police Station. On my bird-watching walk today along the Tama River you can hear the planes taking off from the airport.

Japan Airlines plane in flames at Tokyo's Haneda airport

My daughter and I are about 4km from Haneda in Ota City, and there were a lot of emergency vehicles flashing past about 5 to 6 pm but all quiet now. We really didn't know what was going on until we got a call from home. It's the second "panic call" from home in the past 48 hours with the...

    What scares you about travel?

Having just played "dodge-em" for four hours yesterday on Indian roads to travel 140km in four hours, Chennai to Tirupati, and seeing the smashed cars just left on the side of the road, I think the scare factor changes with time and travel. Years ago, I dreaded/feared these long journeys in...

Personal greetings from the cabin manager - what can you (realistically) ask for?

I'm in this boat too. Years ago, it felt good, now I find it a bit embarrassing when you are in Y. When you're on the window and they lean across two people to thank you it's a bit uncomfortable for the people around you. The other day the CM had a 5 minute discussion. And TG, they often bring...

    Singapore (SIN) Stopover Tips

A lot of the paths are easy to walk, typical of Singapore, so if you have a good-wheeled pram, it should not be an issue. Some of the areas might be a bit hard, but they do sort of have a taxi service there, from memory a minivan-type arrangement so they can drive you around to the main parts. I...

Quick trip to Asia from SYD

A pleasure. I have been working/consulting with a company in Kuching for the past 25 years, so know it well. It has changed over that time, and Covid certainly knocked it around. They are putting the final touches to a new Sheraton downtown now, so it might help to revitalize the centre. Like...

    Singapore (SIN) Stopover Tips

I've recently been staying at Changi Cove out in Changi. Easy Grab ride and far from the madding crowd. I just refuse to pay some of the prices the hotels are charging in the city now. It really is "old-world" Singapore with local restaurants and bars at normal prices. The other benefit is it...

    New controversial work travel policy

I've noted before in other posts that I chair two biennial international technical conferences, which was 6 weeks ago in Siem Reap. We have over 1000 pax from 52 countries, and the two main hotels were the Sofitel ($175) and Sohka ($85). And, rooming levels change from country to country...

Airports have their own music. Who knew?

I recently put two conferences on in Siem Reap with over 1,000 pax. We actually got the main hotel to change their music to ours, which we supplied. My colleague worked for many years with Shangrila/Sheraton/Hyatt and understands that "first hit" when the delegate walks into a venue. The hotel's...

Disinfectant Spray on arrival at SYD

I noticed they did the spray between SIN and KCH two weeks ago on MH. I cannot remember them doing this before. There was no spraying on my other internal East Malaysian flights or from SDK to KUL.
