There are many low SQ/LH/LX fares around at the moment. You can get combined F/J itineraries (including new SQ First on at least one leg) ex-Europe to Australia return for less than QF J.

I didn't find the desk staff at the old MEL J to be a problem but I can imagine they had a hard time of it with QP members trying to enter.
