    Ask The Pilot

Jb can you pls elaborate on why the landing gear is left extended for a wind shear go around? Is it workload or to focus on getting out of it and not change any variables until you are out of the danger Zone?

Book discount VA, Book DL Connect at LAX - separate PNR

I’ve found both delta and va great at checking thru to each other’s flights on separate tickets. delta even has a policy on it. Delta Confirms Through-Check Baggage Policy

    Fly Ahead and Platinum Upgrade

Has anyone had success using Fly Ahead where you had used a complimentary platinum upgrade to business on the original flight? The terms and conditions on fly ahead refers to a seat being available in the original cabin booked, but I'm wondering if they let you keep your business seat if one is...

whats the practical difference between a PAN and a MAYDAY call? Obviously Mayday is more serious / catastrophic, but does ATC treat the 2 any different,y in terms of the priority you get? In the US, isn't it just an emergency ?

    VA-DL Check-in Question

yep. I'm a convert to VA on this route. Used to prefer QF A380 and onwards connections on AA but not any more. I was super surprised / impressed going both ways on SYD LAX and the onward connections at LAX on DL and return (and on separate tickets too!). Bags tagged thru (and surprisingly...

    VA-DL Check-in Question

Will VA be able to provide me a BP in SYD for my LAX-LAS flight on DL and will DL be able to provide me with a BP in LAS for my LAX-SYD flight on VA? I did LAS-LAX-SYD on separate tickets a short while ago - at LAS, the agent checked my bag through to SYD but I had to get the boarding pass at...

    EY Sydney Lounge before VA1

It had the basics - yoghutrs, fruit, cereal etc plus a couple hot dishes buffet style - hash browns and sausages. Nothing special....no a la carte or non breakfast items.

    Ask The Pilot

Is it standard procedure, at least in say a cruise situation, to follow the TCAS RA and ignore any other instructions say from ATC? Is there any pilot discretion? I think there was an accident in Germany where one of the aircraft didn't follow TCAS

B77W Business Class Seat Map - Updated!

I flew it both ways late last month. It is a really excellent product. The hard product is superior to Qantas Skybed II by a long long way and the soft product is far superior to DL and American, so its definitely the way to go. The seat is very comfortable and spacious - only negative is the...

TBIT 'Qantas' Business Lounge - extremely confused, as are staff

I accessed the one world lounge in tbit as a QF sg flying on a domestic aa ticket out of t4 without any issues in the last few days. A few questions various people at the checkpoints along the way (security etc) making sure I knew the flight left from t4, but other than that no issues inc at the...

Qantas new A330 seat maps revealed

Does anyone have any updated perspectives on this? Have exact same question as spruce for a Syd-hkg leg in November on a refurbed a333.

Jb, what do you think of this video showing a 747 takeoff on a short runway. Presumably there is little (no) margin for error given he's rotating at close to the threshold of the runway. http://youtu.be/eu91oZ2_Vag

Jb, is this something you and your fellow pilots do off your own initiative / desire, or is it encouraged by the company time permitting ?

    Ask The Pilot

Thanks jb747. Appreciate your insights as always. Hate to imagine what would have happened with 1 pilot in the coughpit in situations like Qf30/32 and the computers were spewing errors (that's a technical term!)

    Ask The Pilot

Interesting article in the WSJ about a NASA study / examination of single pilot commercial coughpits, with a "co-pilot" located on the ground for busy parts of flight....like a semi-drone I suppose. Not going to happen for a long time, but interested in the pilot's thoughts about this direction...

Just used this new functionality to book a DL reward flight in the US. Much better than having to go thru the call centre and you can search for availability at your leisure.

Domestic Travel in US - Virgin America or Delta

the DL system seems to recognise VA platinum status. You can only book economy comfort seat after buying a ticket - you then do seat selection and it brings up a price - it seems to auto discount the seat if it sees your VA status.
