Have you ever flown a plane?

I've also joined the Canberra Aero Club, it's their 172 I'm learning on. Is your brother still part of the club? I've met a few of the members now, turns out to get volunteers out to wash a plane, all you need is to promise beers and a bbq after the jobs done, so I met quite a few of them a...

Have you ever flown a plane?

Whilst I promise not to give a debrief of every one of my lessons, I'm especially chuffed with today. I've now completed my first real world landing. Today's lesson was all about climbing and descending, which we did between 3,500 and 5,000 ft in the Barton TA. Anyway as the lesson was coming...

Have you ever flown a plane?

So after doing a trial flight last year, and deciding I loved it, I've now signed up to a flight school and have started flight training. Beginning of last month I was given two books to read through, first was basic aeronautical knowledge (BAK), and the Student Air Training Guide (SATG), which...

    Ask The Pilot

Over the weekend I found out a little more about OJA's flight to WOL. They had 75 minutes of fuel on board, enough for 3 attempts to land at WOL and still make it back to SYD. It was around 17 to 18 tons of fuel, all in the centre tank. When they took off from SYD the climb wasn't as steep as...

    Ask The Pilot

I've just finished reading the RAAus Basic Aeronautical Knowledge book (and I'm going to read it a second time to make sure I've understood it all), and they absolutely talk about carburettor's and carb heat in the book, plus follow up quizzes. So I'm wondering if either, 1. He never read that...

    Ask The Pilot

So to bring this back to "ask the pilot", I'm starting my own journey towards getting a pilots licence. What was some of the things that most surprised you when you where starting out getting your own licenses?

    Ask The Pilot

Back of the napkin calculations, 70 or so days of CD quality audio uncompressed can be stored for around $100 on solid state devices these days. Hey you could easily put in multiple SSD's cheaply to record the same data to multiple devices in case one was damaged during a crash, and it would...

Lounge access for OWS flying MH

I normally fly QF, especially when flying with the family. We're a family of 6 (2 adults 4 teenagers), and whilst I'm the only one with status (QF SG / OWS), QF has traditionally welcomed in my entire family into lounges even though the rules there are meant to be a max of a family of 4. Later...

It was wonderful to catch up with everyone again. Thanks to get me outta here for organising. Also I was nearly home when I got the call from the kids that they'd fixed the wifi.

Sydney to LAX - Which carrier for Economy

It's funny, I would have suggested the A380 in Y, simply because they don't quite squeeze people into the A380 in quite the same way as a 787 in Y, plus there feels to be better padding on seats. I am talking QF here. Can't comment on other airlines though.

    VISA Waiver Program to USA

Yes, very normal. Expect anywhere up to 72 hours. Normally when I've done it it takes arround 3 to 4 hours.

    Ask The Pilot

I have to admit, I often wondered what sort of person would want to do ATC for fun for a bunch of simmers who may or may not actually know how to fly / land (in a sim).

    Is 59A really bad on a 787-9?

As a plat, you're likely to get a shadow, so personally I would go for a row of three and do an A and C / H and K and hope you don't get anyone in the middle. Every seat on the B787 in Y should be red on seat guru, they are not good seats at all, narrow, hard and generally uncomfortable...

9 hours International to International at SYD

Can't see any real issue, just give yourself plenty of time to get back to the airport in case the trains decide to stop running. (they randomly seem to do that)
