How about splitting the trip between JQ Business, SYD- HNL & AA F HNL - LAX? You would need to check this but the JQ flights would earn 280 sc's & the AA 300 sc's Also looking at ticket prices, you should be able to sneak it in under 5k...just. Just keep your service expectations modest.

Flew Air Berlin TXL - MUC in Y mid December. On time flight, newish 737 ( 700? ), efficient crew who served a little snack ( warm pretzel shaped bread roll - not bad ) & beverage. Paid $60 AUD ( inc 23 kg luggage ) so certainly value for money. Overall, completely acceptable for short flights

If you have the time & can amend your ticket, stay overnight at DFW & head over to MIA the next day. americanairlines.com.au has the DFW Hyatt Regency for $100/night. Huge hotel 1980s style hotel with renovated rooms, great beds. 5 min van ride from terminal D.

You will need to clear immigration to connect to the MIA flight so allow enough time. Maybe 3 hours? Transitting DFW is very efficient with the Skytrain. I did this flight in Y back in August. It's a long way but with the updated entertainment system & seating the flight is about as good as Y...
