Many thanks to everyone who responded with great advice. I've booked and picked up my eticket last night - managed to get Malaysia Airlines on the dates that I wanted for around $7100 inc taxes which I thought was a pretty good price. Route is MEL - KL - LHR with only a couple of hours or so...
