My guess is that: 1. MEL is the second busiest airport in Australia and 2. It's much better than SYD, the busiest. Those two would be enough for it to win most surveys.

Well yes, unless your check-in luggage can be through checked and you can use a transit counter for any new boarding pass. MNL seemed to me to be like a typical international airport. Just not a very great one!

Mmmm. I guess I don't fly on USA airlines enough. For my dozens of flights in the last 12 months (all non-USA carriers), it's been required to have window blinds open during take-off and landing. The crew even do it if the pax doesn't pay attention.

What airlines allow blinds to be closed during takeoff and landing?

Not insurmountable ones however! Sometimes after a red light it's been just to use the manual processing line. It's always worked for me eventually.

OK. But I can report countless "hiccups" when I have (departing Australia) checked-in with my EU passport (that I would use on arrival) and then used my Australian passport at the gates in Australia. It all works OK but needs a manual intervention.
