Any idea on passport renewal times currently, in partic. in Sydney? Will submit renewal at Post Office on Mon 3.11. Going to NZ on Sat 29.11. Website suggests renewal can take up to 6 weeks. Priority pocessing takes 5 business days and cost an additional $102. Probably will pay this reluctantly...

Yup...was standing ouside Hilton Xi'An and google maps said the hotel was 500m away! A Map all the way in China!

Yup, +1 had to use her mum's local number to register for 12306 to buy train tickets without the booking fee that trip.com charges.

As I said, in Guangzhou, the public incl hotel WiFi does not seem to have a Firewall....in Xian and Chengdu different story. At Hilton Xian, the hotel Wifi actually disabled my VPN! In future trips to China, I will just buy double the data I normally would buy...having said that, I have just...

Just to wrap up....Interesting, on connecting to the Conrad Guangzhou WiFi, there was no Firewall at all! Had lunch in a Dim Sum place in city, and there was no Firewall on their Wifi either...was able to post on FB using their WiFi :) Have just over 2 GB left on my foreign registered SIM card...

My VPN cannot penetrate the Great Firewall through the Hilton Xi'An wifi...only my data SIM card can...have ~ 5 GB left for remaining 6 days in China :( Somehow the Hilton WiFi disconnecrs my VPN :(

I have now been in China for 11 days, with a week to go. Based on my personal ewperiences so far, if intending to use a VPN, setup before arriving. If buying a non Chinese data SIM, by at least double the anount you would normally use. Set up both WeChat Pay and AliPay linked to your credit...

This is referring to hotel wifi...the physical SIM i bought works fine just that Im running out of dara for this 4 week trip...temporary solution found ..see above post

So far for last 2-3 days, VPN routed via Philipines allows me to access all sites via hotel wifi saving my SiM data.

Interesting....I have to keep changing the country Im routing the VPN through....first Australia, then Singapore, then Japan and now Philipines...it seems the Firewall works out what you are doing and starts blocking... :(

Yes it does....I bought 20 GB for a 4.5 week trip which is not enough! By using the VPN workaound, I can use hotel / local Wifi networks to save my Sim data. FB app does not work at all, only the desktop version which took me 5 days to figure out :(

It is such an important train connecting the terminals too! Used it last Saturday and it was so much better and faster than the bus!
